Giants GM Joe Schoen struggles to do the impossible: Defend the team he’s built | The Athletic
The question ownership needs to answer over the next month is whether they should fully clean house. Schoen listed off the pieces on the roster that will make the Giants attractive to head-coaching candidates. But there’s no way to add Schoen to the list of selling points.
It would obviously be more enticing for head coaching candidates to start with a clean slate on the same timeline as a new GM. There’s no benefit for a new head coach to join a general manager who would be entering his fifth year on the heels of three consecutive abysmal seasons.

Ideal Landing Spots for Mike Tomlin if Steelers, Coach Were to Split in 2026 | Bleacher Report
Two franchises are already set to have openings in 2026. The Tennessee Titans and New York Giants fired Brian Callahan and Brian Daboll, respectively, in-season and should already be leafing through the list of candidates. Of these two franchises, New York certainly feels like the better opportunity. Jaxson Dart and Cam Ward are both promising rookie quarterbacks, but the Giants appear to have more young building blocks on their roster.
Tennessee has surrounded Ward with one of the league’s most lackluster supporting casts, while New York has intriguing pieces around Dart. Malik Nabers and Cam Skattebo may be out for the year, but they can form a strong trio with Dart moving forward. The Giants also have some solid defensive contributors—like Dexter Lawrence, Brian Burns and Abdul Carter—who should appeal to Tomlin and his defensive background. Plus, the opportunity to return one of the league’s premier franchises to relevance and potentially cement a Hall of Fame career would be hard to ignore.
One presser won’t change Joe Schoen’s fate as Giants GM either way | The Record
If you wanted Joe Schoen fired before he stepped to the microphone inside the New York Giants’ field house on Tuesday afternoon, nothing he was about to say was going to change your mind.
The thing is: to remain the Giants’ general manager beyond this season, Schoen does not have to change the minds who want him gone. In reality, that’s a fruitless exercise.
Unlike coaching hires, fired GMs (like Thomas Dimitroff, Ray Farmer, Brian Gaine, Ryan Grigson, Jeff Ireland and Jon Robinson on this list) typically don’t get a second shot at the job. So that’s worth remembering, too.
Some of the names would include Ray Agnew — Lions assistant GM, Chad Alexander — Chargers assistant GM, Matt Berry — Seahawks vice president of player acquisition and Mike Greenberg — Buccaneers assistant GM.
Dan Orlovsky is tired of the Dart-taking-too-many-hits talk
6. Jaxson Dart, QB, New York Giants. Dart missed two games with a concussion, but we’ve seen positive signs of development despite a nightmare season for the Giants, who fired their coach and have missed multiple offensive stars due to injuries. Dart can play in rhythm as a thrower, and he can deliver the ball quickly to the third level. Plus, his dual-threat traits create conflict for defenses; New York can use him on designed carries and second-reaction scrambles. The arrow is certainly pointing up here for future seasons.
Abdul Carter has had issues all year with being late and/or missing team obligations. Now fired coach Brian Daboll fined Carter for it on multiple occasions. Interim coach Mike Kafka has been heavier handed with it, with the most recent benching coming after Carter was also sat down for the start of the Giants’ Week 11 game against the Packers.
Now, there’s nothing overly nefarious here. The Green Bay benching was triggered by Carter losing track of time—getting red-light therapy in the players lounge while the team started a walkthrough a few steps away on the practice field. That it hasn’t happened is an indictment on everyone, Carter included. The rookie had a reputation coming out of Penn State, fair or not, for being selfish and entitled, and NFL teams were well aware of it. He’s living up to it now. And the fact that the team hasn’t been able to reel him in, and ingrain how his actions the other six days of the week are costing him on game day, raises questions on a lot of other people there.

T Jermaine Eluemunor, New York Giants. Hardly anything has gone right for the Giants in 2025, with the team already firing head coach Brian Daboll. However, New York’s offensive line has fared well, sitting fifth in PFF pass-blocking grade. Eluemunor is a big reason for that performance.
Eluemunor’s 73.2 PFF pass-blocking mark places 23rd among 62 qualified tackles, and his 97.7 pass-blocking efficiency score is 10th. Moreover, Eluemunor sits 14th in pressure rate allowed (4.7%) among qualified tackles since 2024. A steady presence at right tackle with experience playing both left tackle and guard should warrant a bigger payday than expected on the open market.
Best bend/flex: Brian Burns, Giants Burns moves as if he has WD-40 on his hips, with the flexibility and lower-body control to turn the corner easily. His 13 sacks rank second in the league.
