The Kansas City Chiefs entered Thursday’s 31-28 loss to the Dallas Cowboys without a starting offensive lineman and a key defensive back.

Unfortunately, the team sustained more injuries to both position groups during the game.

On the Chiefs’ second defensive series, safety Bryan Cook left the field with an ankle injury. CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson initially reported that Cook would try to stay in the game and play on third downs. However, at halftime, Cook was reported as questionable to return. He did not play in the second half.

Also at halftime, right tackle Jawaan Taylor was listed as questionable to return with an ankle injury. He was later ruled out. Swing tackle Jaylon Moore came on for Taylor.

To make matters worse, left tackle Josh Simmons was off the field later in the third quarter, initially without explanation. Simmons was initially listed as questionable with a wrist injury — but was quickly downgraded to out.

After the game, head coach Andy Reid offered minimal insight into the seriousness of the injuries.

“We had a couple of injuries here,” Reid confirmed. “Bryan Cook sprained his right ankle. Jawaan Taylor hurt his triceps — [he] had a strain of that. Josh Simmons hurt his wrist. We’ll have to see how those things recover.”

Pete Sweeney of The Kansas City Star reported that Simmons had his left wrist in a cast and his arm in a sling after the game.

After finishing the game with three backup offensive linemen in front of him, quarterback Patrick Mahomes praised their efforts.

“They battled,” he remarked. “That’s a hard thing to do on a short week coming into a good defensive line — one that can rush the passer from all five positions. They did a good job battling and getting in when their number was called. Hopefully, we can get some of these guys back and get them healthy over this extended week that we have. But I have confidence in those guys stepping in to play if need be.”
