Carter is still seeking the breakthrough that seemed inevitable when he was unstoppable during training camp and the preseason. But he only has a half sack 11 games into his NFL career. It’s foolish to call Carter a bust based on the box score. Anyone who has watched the games can see his impact, even if it hasn’t translated to as many sacks as expected.
But Carter hasn’t been as disruptive recently. He averaged four pressures in the first eight games of the season, but he has only has three pressures total in the past three games. And while Carter wasn’t drafted with the No. 3 pick for his run defense, he’s been exploited too often on the edge. He has too much talent to not eventually have a breakout game. But this isn’t the most welcoming opponent. Penei Sewell is arguably the best right tackle in the NFL and left tackle Taylor Decker is a steady veteran.
The Jameis Winston Experience
Bold prediction: Giants edge Abdul Carter will have a big enough game that he’ll vault himself into second place in the Defensive Rookie of the Year odds. (He’s currently sixth.) Perhaps last week’s opening series benching will be a wake-up call.
Giants corner Dru Phillips: ‘I didn’t get benched,’ must be better in ‘critical situations’ | New York Daily News
Phillips is tied for the fourth-most penalties (eight) against in the NFL, and his 122 penalty yards against rank second in the league behind only Denver’s Riley Moss (nine for 178). He has also been victimized during some of the Giants defense’s collapses, especially during the infamous loss at Denver, when his finish on a play or two was far less than acceptable.
Phillips said he knows he has to play better. ““It’s a rotation, I didn’t get benched,” he said. “I’ve got to be better in critical situations and reduce penalties. I’ve just got to show up, work and compete,” he said.
Across the past 11 months, Isaiah Hodgins has had passes thrown to him by Brock Purdy, Mac Jones, Aaron Rodgers and Mason Rudolph.
He also caught footballs fed into his own jugs machine at home in Arizona from his wife, Maya, and their 5-year-old son, Isaiah Jr.

New York Giants: 1-4. The Giants’ record in one-score games is 1-4 this season—a sample that includes heartbreaking losses to the Cowboys and Broncos. Flip a few of those, and you’re respectable instead of 2-9, but this team is still deeply flawed with the league’s worst run defense (in terms of yards allowed per attempt) and red-zone defense.

Joe Schoen, New York Giants. After last year’s 3-14 finish, Giants owner John Mara said his patience was running out. With the Giants off to a 2-8 start this year, he fired coach Brian Daboll but left Schoen in place, saying the general manager would oversee New York’s coaching search. There are some around the league, however, who question the sincerity of those intentions. Schoen has certainly had a fair share of swings and misses. He gave Daniel Jones a $160 million deal following the 2022 season, then cut Jones last season, taking a $22 million cap hit. He let Saquon Barkley walk in free agency and then watched him sign with the Philadelphia Eagles and help them win a Super Bowl. His misses in the draft and free agency have kept the Giants stuck in neutral as well. Time will tell if Mara does indeed give Schoen more time to turn things around. But his status could hinge on whether the Giants’ top choice for a head coach insists on bringing his own personnel man with him.
Biggest positional needs: Linebacker and guard. Micah McFadden, who has missed most of this season after foot surgery, will be a free agent. So will his replacement in the lineup, Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles. And this season’s right guard, Greg Van Roten, will be 36 and a free agent.
This week’s opponent
Coach Dan Campbell was selected by the Giants as the 79th pick of the 1999 NFL draft. He suited up with them from 1999 to 2002 and developed his foundation there. “Obviously, [Giants president and CEO] Mr. [John] Mara is still there, and he was there when I was there and that Mara family will always mean something to me,” Campbell said. “I had four good years there, and it felt like a family.”
Since Campbell became coach in 2021, the Lions have gone for it on fourth down 32% of the time, the highest mark in the NFL.
Lions TE Sam LaPorta likely out for season after procedure | Pride of Detroit
Head coach Dan Campbell confirmed in his Friday press conference that Sam LaPorta had surgery on his back and is unlikely to return this year. But LaPorta should be OK in the future.
“He did have a procedure and he’s going to be out for a while — a while. I think we would be fortunate to have a chance to get him back for the rest of the season,” Campbell said, adding that the chance of LaPorta’s return is “very, very slim. The good news is the procedure went really well,”

Detroit Lions: 0 This is the total number of fourth-quarter comebacks from a Lions team that fell short in big moments against both Minnesota and Philadelphia in November. Jared Goff has a mere 66.7 rating in the fourth quarter of one-score games.
