According to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, the Indianapolis Colts are signing former Baltimore Ravens veteran defensive tackle Chris Wormley to their practice squad:
With All-Pro stalwart DeForest Buckner out at least until Week 15 on the road against the Seattle Seahawks on injured reserve, the Colts could eventually be activating some veteran interior defensive line depth on game days.
Originally a 2017 3rd round pick of the Ravens, the 6’5”, 300 pound Wormley has 150 tackles (82 solo), 11.0 sacks, 10 passes defensed, 2 forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery during 87 career games (31 starts)—having also played for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Carolina Panthers.
He most recently played in 2024 during a second stint with Baltimore, where he had 4 tackles (1 solo) in 2 games.
Per PFF, the former First-Team All-Big Ten standout for Michigan (and 2nd-Team All-American) earned a +68.5 overall grade last year for the Ravens, which was highlighted by a +70.2 run defense grade, albeit in limited action.
With defensive ends Tyquan Lewis (groin) and Samson Ebukam (knee) also currently on the mend, the Colts have a very depleted defensive line collectively—in addition to the (hopefully) short-term loss of Buckner.
The 32-year-old Wormley has some impressive physical measurables with some proven experience to go along with it. If he’s ultimately promoted to the 53-man active roster, it’s possible he could make an immediate impact rotationally as a backup, especially given how beat up the Colts are along the defensive line as an entire unit.
If nothing else, this ‘down the stretch run’ veteran defensive line taxi-man squad signing can’t exactly hurt anything.
