The Philadelphia Eagles officially announced two moves since Wednesday afternoon. Here’s an overview:
- G/C Willie Lampkin’s 21-day practice window to return from injured reserve was opened.
- EDGE Patrick Johnson was signed to the practice squad.
Let’s sort through this news on a player-by-player basis.
WILLIE LAMPKIN
As a reminder, the Eagles claimed Lampkin off waivers from the Los Angeles Rams back on August 27. Two days later, they placed him on injured reserve.
Now presumably healthy, Lampkin is returning to practice. It’ll be interesting to see if/when the Eagles decide to activate him to the roster and what exactly his role will be.
It’s worth noting that Eagles starting center Cam Jurgens was not spotted during the media-attended portion of Thursday’s practice. If he has to miss another game, it’ll be Brett Toth starting at the pivot once again. Lampkin could be activated to serve as more interior offensive line depth behind Toth.
Though quite undersized by traditional standards, Lampkin is loved by film watchers. He might be able to be a solid backup, if not more.
The Eagles have until 4:00 PM Eastern on Monday, November 10 to activate Lampkin to the roster in time to play against the Packers.
PATRICK JOHNSON
The Eagles released Johnson ahead of the NFL trade deadline on Tuesday, which meant that he wasn’t subject to waivers as a vested veteran. Had they waited until after the deadline, he could’ve been claimed by another team.
Instead, Johnson is staying in Philly by signing with the Eagles’ practice squad. He figures to provide edge rusher depth and contribute on special teams if he’s ever temporarily activated to the game day roster. Note that Johnson only has two such elevations remaining in the regular season (he was previously elevated while on the PS in Week 1).
