The Los Angeles Rams just traded for Roger McCreary and now they might actually need him for Sunday’s tilt against the New Orleans Saints. Head coach Sean McVay told reporters on Friday that top cornerback Darious Williams is going to be listed as doubtful with a shoulder injury, which is almost the same as saying he’s out.
Roughly 95% of players listed as doubtful do not end up playing that week.
In search of answers at cornerback ever since trading away Jalen Ramsey in 2024, the Rams finally felt like they had one when Williams stepped up as a starter a few games ago. Williams has held the last two teams to a passer rating of 39.6 on targets in his direction, with only 2-of-13 being completed for 10 yards.
Now that Williams is expected to sit this game against the Saints out, defensive coordinator Chris Shula will have to lean on Cobie Durant, Emmanuel Forbes, and McCreary, with Quentin Lake manning the slot. McCreary is mainly just a slot corner himself but McVay and Shula might have to test him outside immediately. Forbes has been one of the worst cornerbacks in the league this year, so he might have to sit in favor of McCreary.
McVay said every other injured player is expected to be ready to go.
The Saints have a great receiver in Chris Olave, but he has been hamstrung by New Orleans’ problems at quarterback and offensive play calling. Olave’s QB this week will be rookie Tyler Shough in his NFL debut. Without Williams on the field in this game, Shough may know exactly what he needs to do to have a good first start: Find Forbes or McCreary.
Should the Rams be concerned about not having Williams or is this the best game for it to happen?
