The Miami Dolphins made a massive move on Friday, “mutually agreeing” to part ways with general manager Chris Grier after the team fell to 2-7 on the season and with the trade deadline approaching. The other half of the changes many fans want to see, head coach Mike McDaniel also leaving the team, does not appear to be happening any time soon. According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, McDaniel will “remain Miami’s head coach for the remainder of the season at least.”
McDaniel was hired as Miami’s head coach in 2022 and immediately found success with the team. He led them to two playoff appearances in his first two years and directed the league’s top offense in 2023. Miami was a fun team, with a strike from anywhere aggressiveness. In 2024, however, the league seemed to catch up to McDaniel’s schemes and any adjustments the coach has tried to make have not worked. Miami finished the 2024 season 8-9 and missed the playoffs. This year, they have started 2-7 and have looked outcoached for most of the games.
Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, in his statement about the parting of ways with Grier, said, “We must improve – in 2025, 2026, and beyond – and it needs to start right now…our performance on the field and our team-building process have not been good enough. There are no excuses.” That same thought process could lead to the team making a move at head coach as well, but it appears that decision will come once the 2025 season ends.
