Can you imagine if the Eagles had not kept Dallas Goedert?

For a long time this summer, it did not appear as if Dallas Goedert would be wearing Eagles green in 2025.

As the calendar flipped April last spring, Goedert was at the center of virtually every trade rumor involving the Eagles, and it seemed for all the world as if he would be traded away after June 1. I argued for this website why it would have been foolish for Howie Roseman to deal away his starting tight end.

When it comes to tight end Dallas Goedert, the Eagles should stand pat.

With the defense taking hits in free agency this spring, it will be incumbent on the offense to continue churning out the yards and points in their title defense season. Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown, Devonta Smith and Saquon Barkley, along with the existing offensive line, make for a pretty fine core, but removing Goedert from the equation would be a major risk, one the team should not take.

Following two more red zone touchdowns in the Birds’ 38-20 win over the New York Giants on Sunday, all Eagles fans are thankful Goedert remained in Philadelphia.

Goedert has always been one of the best pass-catching tight ends in football, but he’s also a unicorn in that he’s so incredibly valuable as a run-blocker, too. The offense has struggled when back-ups Grant Calcaterra and Kylen Granson have been asked to block, and yet had the Eagles not held onto Goedert, that’s what we would have been getting. Would Roseman have swung a trade for a tight end in that eventuality? Probably, but none would have been as reliable or talented as Goedert has been through the first half of the season.

His two TDs on Sunday gave him seven on the season, tied with Detroit’s Amon-Ra St. Brown for most in the NFL. Of his 7 touchdowns, 6 have come from inside the red zone, a major reason why the Eagles have converted 17 of 20 trips inside the 20 into touchdowns, most in the NFL.

At 30 years old, Goedert isn’t the most dynamic tight end in football and he’ll certainly miss his share of games due to injury. So far this season, he’s been healthy, missing only the Eagles’ Week 2 match-up against the Chiefs. For the second straight week, he caught all three of his targets and has scored at least one touchdown in five of his seven games.

Eagles fans aren’t the only ones thankful Goedert is back for another season.

Goedert’s seven touchdowns already surpasses his career high of five, and he’s now three shy of the franchise record for tight ends, 10, held by Pete Retzlaff (1965). Offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo has seemingly unlocked something inside the red zone with his tight end and Jalen Hurts also appears to feel very comfortable feeding the ball to Goedert, especially close to the goal line.

Goedert is unlikely to be a bulk guy, not with Saquon Barkley, A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith on the roster. As such, his 30 receptions on 39 targets is tied for 9th-most among tight ends and his 289 yards receiving is 14th. But he does have four 20+ yard receptions, with only six tight ends having more this year, and Goedert’s 10.97% target share ranks third among NFL tight ends, according to Sumer Sports.

The Eagles will almost certainly be drafting his eventual replacement early in next April’s NFL Draft, but for now, everyone is grateful Roseman and Goedert decided that one more year together was important to keep this Super Bowl window propped open. So far, an up-and-down offense is reaping the rewards of a steady and consistent Dallas Goedert.
