The Philadelphia Eagles activated the 21-day practice window for Darius Cooper to return from injured reserve, according to an official team announcement on Thursday.
Cooper suffered a shoulder injury during a special teams play in the Eagles’ Week 3 win over the Los Angeles Rams. The undrafted rookie wide receiver was then placed on injured reserve, which required him to miss four games before being eligible to play again.
It remains to be seen if Cooper will be ready to play in this Sunday’s game against the New York Giants. The Eagles opening his window might be related to A.J. Brown missing two straight practices due to a hamstring injury. If Brown can’t play, the Eagles currently have just four healthy receivers on the active roster:
- DeVonta Smith
- Jahan Dotson
- John Metchie III
- Xavier Gipson
And Gipson is here more for his kick returning ability than his ability to play on offense.
The Eagles have until 4:00 PM Eastern on Saturday, October 25 to activate Cooper in order for him to be able to play against the Giants. If he’s active, he could be WR3 behind Smitty and Dotson in addition to playing on special teams. Metchie didn’t play any offensive snaps in Week 7.
Cooper had an impressive summer to go from long shot UDFA signing to making the Eagles’ roster and having a role on game day. That the Eagles are willing to use one of their eight season-long return from injured reserve activation on Cooper is a positive sign for his standing on the team.
