Postgame Quick Hits | Tale of Two Halves For Flacco’s First Start in Loss to Packers
Ja’Marr Chase showed why he’s the Bengals All-Pro wide receiver. He says he had all of a dozen reps with Flacco during the week (he was sick Friday) and still came up with 94 yards on 10 catches and an unbelievable touchdown on a 19-yarder from Flacco with 4:11 left that cut it to 24-16.
“It was actually called another play, but I was telling (Flacco) to change it because they were jumping a lot of routes,” Chase said. “But they ended up clouding me instead of running three buzz to my side. It just ended up working. He just threw it up to me, and I just make the catch.”
Matt LaFleur Timeout Robs Bengals’ Evan McPherson of Longest FG in NFL History
As Cincinnati trailed the Packers 10–0 in the waning seconds of the first half, Zac Taylor called his field goal unit out onto the field. There, McPherson and his unit lined up for a 67-yard field goal attempt, which, if made, would have set a new NFL record.
The Bengals were so desperate for help that they actually called to check in on one quarterback who’s actually retired, and that’s four-time Pro Bowler Derek Carr. The 34-year-old announced his retirement back in May, but he left the door slightly open for a possible return if he found the right situation. Although Carr is retired, he’s still under contract with the Saints, so if the Bengals wanted to add him, they would have had to make a deal with New Orleans.
Everything the Bengals Said after Week 6 against the Packers
“Well, I thought as an offense we settled in, you know probably sometime in the second quarter. And I thought that we were able to get over the hump in that quarter but we came out and played a good second half. But usually against a good football team, playing one good half isn’t going to be good enough. But we gave ourselves a chance there at the end and did some good things but just not enough early on.”
Cincinnati Bengals reach moral victory stage. Hey, Joe Flacco isn’t bad | Williams
But seriously, there were positives for an offense that was mostly immobile all season. It took getting an immobile quarterback to get it going. Flacco’s 19-yard dart to Ja’Marr Chase for a touchdown on fourth down late in the game was the type of throw that should give Bengals fans hope.
