Things aren’t great around the New York Giants wide receiver room.
The Giants’ receiving corps was probably best described as “fine, but thin” at the start of the season. Then the Giants lost Malik Nabers to a torn ACL in Week 4 and Darius Slayton to a hamstring injury in Week 5. To make matters worse, neither Jalin Hyatt nor Beaux Collins looked like they could possibly cash in on their opportunities.
It’s enough to make us ask: Should the Giants take a flier on (now former) Tennessee Titans receiver Treylon Burks?
The Titans formally released Burks from their injured reserve on Tuesday afternoon, ending his tumultuous and disappointing tenure in Tennessee. The Titans drafted Burks in the first round (18th overall) in the 2022 NFL Draft. He was intended to be the replacement for A.J. Brown, who they had just traded to the Philadelphia Eagles. Instead, Burks was a monumental disappointment and a true bust. He played in just 27 of 51 possible games due to injuries and collecting 53 receptions for 699 yards and one touchdown from 2022 to 2024, when his season (and time in Tennessee) were ended by a torn ACL. Burks also suffered a fractured collarbone in training camp, but has now been cleared to return to the field.
There is a reason why Burks was drafted 18th overall. He has excellent size at 6-foot-2, 225 pounds, and is a powerful (and effective) runner with the ball in his hands. He had 19 touchdowns and 2,111 total yards as a sophomore and junior at Arkansas, and can be used all around the offensive formation. And while Burks definitely had a disappointing performance at the Scouting Combine, his versatility to play everything from wide receiver to h-back or runningback was an asset in college.
It’s possible that the Titans simply never used him correctly… Or that he’s a player who was able to win with superior size at the collegiate level, and that hasn’t translated to the NFL. Either way, he has been an unequivocal bust for the Titans.
That said, having to realistically ask the question “Should Jalin Hyatt, Lil’Jordan Humphrey, or Dalen Cambre be our No. 2 wide receiver?” is the kind of thing to make teams a bit desperate.
Desperate enough, perhaps, to kick the tires on a player like Burks. So I put it to you, do you think the Giants should take a flier on Burks?
