How are you feeling about this matchup?
Not to immediately undercut my predictive capability … but … to do exactly just that … I’m 0-2 when it comes to forecasting Philadelphia Eagles games this season.
So, maybe you should feel good about me taking the Eagles to lose their Week 3 matchup against the New Orleans Saints.
This is a tough spot for the Birds. They’re coming off a short week and they’re once again without A.J. Brown against a team that’s outscored their opponents by a combined 62 points this season.
The Saints are probably due for some level of regression after such a hot start. But here’s the thing: the Eagles’ defense hasn’t been able to effectively stop the run or rush the passer. According to my calculations, that’s a pretty bad combination. And I’m not so optimistic that things are about to change. The Saints’ offensive line had their way with the Dallas Cowboys’ defense last weekend. How could I be surprised if that happens again here? It seems like Alvin Kamara is poised for another big game.
The biggest case for believing in the Eagles is that the NFL is weird and unpredictable. Maybe Jalen Hurts continues his success against Dennis Allen defenses (2-0). Maybe Taysom Hill being out limits Klint Kubiak’s creativity. Maybe the Saints get a little too high on their own supply and take the Eagles lightly.
I don’t think the Eagles can’t win. That they’re only 2.5-point underdogs seems to indicate the game will be more competitive than many (myself included) expect it be.
I just come back to having a hard time believing in the defense. But perhaps the offense can totally carry the team to victory in a shootout.
