Power Mock 2.0 – Are the Giants’ prospects about to change?

It’s the first week of the month (October, if you hadn’t noticed), which means that it’s once time for our monthly Power Mock.

The New York Giants have risen in the power rankings following their near wins over the Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs — which were followed by their upset win over the Los Angeles Chargers. That said, the Giants haven’t risen all that far in the rankings, and their team needs haven’t shifted that much — though the injury to Malik Nabers could either reveal a desperate need at receiver or surprising depth.

As always, the Power Mock is our own unique take on a composite Power Rankings, with the goal of using power rankings and the draft as a lens to examine both the Giants and the prospects currently playing in college football.

In order to determine our “draft” order, I averaged the power rankings from ESPN, ESPN’s Football Power Index, NFL.com, The Athletic, The Ringer, Pro Football Focus, FTN, and NFELO.

I then flipped that composite ranking on its head, with the 32nd ranked team getting the first pick, while the 1st ranked team gets the last pick. In the cases where the average rankings are tied, I used the remaining strength of schedule as a tie-breaker.

Full Draft Order

  1. Tennessee Titans – Reuben Bain (EDGE, Miami)
  2. New Orleans Saints – Garrett Nussmeier (QB, LSU)
  3. Carolina Panthers – Caleb Downs (S, Ohio State)
  4. New York Jets – Fernando Mendoza (QB, Indiana)
  5. Cleveland Browns – Spencer Fano (OT, Utah)
  6. New York Giants – Francis Mauigoa (OT, Miami)
  7. Cincinnati Bengals – Kadyn Proctor (OT, Alabama)

  9. Maimi Dolphins – Jordyn Tyson (WR, Arizona State)
  10. New England Patriots – T.J. Parker (DL/EDGE, Clemson)
  11. Chicago Bears – Keldrick Faulk (EDGE, Auburn)
  12. Dallas Cowboys – Caleb Banks (iDL, Florida)
  13. Arizona Cardinals – Jeremiyah Love (RB, Notre Dame)
  14. Atlanta Falcons – Jermod McCoy (CB, Tennessee)
  15. Houston Texans – Caleb Lomu (OT, Utah)
  16. Minnesota Vikings – Mansoor Delane (CB, LSU)
  17. San Francisco 49ers – Makai Lemon (WR, USC)
  18. Baltimore Ravens – Denzel Boston (WR, Washington)
  19. Jacksonville Jaguars – Kenyon Sadiq (TE, Oregon)

[Summer Scouting]

Team Needs: Offensive line, wide receiver, linebacker, cornerback

The correct answer here once again seems to be either offensive lineman — which would likely be offensive tackle — or try to work a trade back.

Since I don’t do trades in these, my only real option is to select an offensive lineman. Last time around I picked Spencer Fano out of Utah, however this time I opted for the more powerful Mauigoa. Mauigoa was neck and neck with Kadyn Proctor to be the top tackle in his recruiting class and has played up to that level over the last two years. So far he’s played 2,030 snaps at right tackle (per PFF), but only given up 8 sacks and 5 QB hits through three years — most of which (5 and 3, respectively) came in his first year.

Mauigoa is a big boy and generally listed at 6-foot-6, and anywhere from 315 to 335 pounds, however he maintains enough mobility to deal with speed off the edge or move laterally in zone blocking. Jermaine Eluemunor has played well for the Giants at right tackle, but the could opt to get younger at right tackle and try to find a long-term bookend for Andrew Thomas.

The Giants have almost risen to the point where I could justify picking Arizona State receiver Jordyn Tyson to add another weapon for Jaxson Dart and further reinforce the receiving corps. Tyson is a good route runner with prototypical size and solid route running, and could be a real target if the Giants trade back.

I would look long and hard at a Day 2 linebacker like C.J. Allen from Georgia, or Arvell Reese and Sonny Styles from Ohio State. Likewise, Louisville WR Chris Bell could give the Giants some much-needed size and another 220-pound YAC sledgehammer to pair with Cam Skattebo or Tyrone Tracy in the open field.
