I guess I could just write that the Bengals need a new coach, an actual general manager, and new ownership. While that may be the real glaring issues facing the franchise, I will try and look at three players that need to have big weeks for the Bengals to have a shot of pulling off the upset against Detroit this week.
It is fair to say the offensive line has been bad. It is fair to say the running game is non-existent. It is fair to say Zac Taylor is in over his head.
Jake Browning
It is also fair to say that Jake Browning has not played well this season. He currently has three touchdowns and five interceptions on the season. He missed wide-open players throughout the Denver game. He has to play much better this week for the Bengals to stand any chance of beating the Lions.
Amarius Mims
Mims is coming off a week where he gave up two sacks. The tape wasn’t awful, but the bad plays were really bad. Zac Taylor getting the play calls in is a part of the problem. Dealing with inside counter moves is another. He also recorded two penalties during the game. Those are drive killers, which this offense cannot afford to have.
His assignment this week? A guy by the name of Aidan Hutchinson. Hutchinson already has twenty-three pressures and four sacks on the season. Mims will have to be at his best all day long, or Hutchinson will wreck this game.
TJ Slaton
Slaton was the Bengals’ first signing during free agency. He was expected to come in and help the Bengals limit the opposing running game. So far, it has been mixed results.
With the duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery coming to town, he has to play at a high level. Combined, “Sonic and Knuckles” are averaging over five yards per carry on the season. If they let those guys go off in the running game, we could be in for another blowout loss.
Who do you think needs to have a big performance for the Bengals to pull out a win on Sunday?
