Chase was not a fan of what he felt was a hip-drop tackle.
Ja’Marr Chase was not happy Sunday.
The Cincinnati Bengals’ star receiver received a 15-yard penalty for abusive language towards a referee after what he perceived as a hip-drop tackle that was done by Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie.
The play ended up costing the Bengals even after Joe Burrow did his best to get in the middle of Chase and the ref. Chase is being fined $31,599 for what the league dubbed “verbal abuse of an official.”
However, there were hip-drop tackles in the game, which the Bengals barely lost. There were certainly frustrations in the outcome and throughout the game, but many of these were justified complaints.
After all, Nick Bolton also was hit with a fine after Sunday’s game, a $16,883 one in which he had a hip-drop tackle on Bengals tight end Erick All.

The league is cracking down on these dangerous plays, and with many resulting in major injuries over the last few seasons, players are often justified if they feel something was not fairly called.
However, in Chase’s situation, some things don’t quite have to be relayed as aggressively. While the monetary amount won’t be huge for Chase, the situation made fans remember the Bengals’ playoff loss a few years back, when numerous unsportsmanlike conduct plays cost them the game.
In addition, Andre Iosivas was fined for one of his celebrations during the game.
The NFL fined #Bengals WR Andrei Iosivas $5,305 for unsportsmanlike conduct/violent gesture — a bow-and-arrow celebration last week.

The Bengals need to clean this up, especially as they head into a primetime Monday Night Football battle with the Washington Commanders Monday.
