The Jaxson Dart era has begun.
Dianna Russini of The Athletic is reporting that the team has made a change at quarterback and Jaxson Dart will get the start against the Los Angeles Chargers.
The decision to make Dart the starter comes after Russell Wilson threw a pair of ugly interceptions en route to an anemic 9-point showing. While Wilson had a career day against the Dallas Cowboys, the offense largely sputtered against the Washington Commanders and Kansas City Chiefs.
Dart was inserted into the game at points against the Chiefs to cheers from the home crowd, while Wilson was met with boos when he returned to the field.
While the rookie quarterback has gotten onto the field, he has yet to throw a pass in a regular season NFL game, and each of his snaps were zone-read plays. That said, Dart had an excellent preseason, far exceeding expectations for the 25th overall pick.
He completed 32 of 47 pass attempts for 372 yards and 3 touchdowns to no interceptions. He also carried the ball 6 times for 52 yards and a touchdown.
The decision will likely significantly change the Giants’ offense, as Dart has a very different skill set from Wilson, and brings the kind of mobility that the veteran no longer possesses. Likewise, this also likely bodes well for the health of star left tackle Andrew Thomas — or the Giants’ faith in rookie Marcus Mbow if Thomas is still on a rep count.
