Who’s the starting QB for the Giants? Brian Daboll refuses to say

Russell Wilson? Jaxson Dart? Maybe even Jameis Winston? New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll refused on Monday afternoon to declare who the team’s starting quarterback would be this Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers.

“We just watched the tape here,” Daboll said. “We’re in the meetings with players right now.

“We’re working through all personnel decisions, and we’ll do that over the next few days.”

Daboll tried to pass the quarterback question off as a typical part of the weekly evaluation process.

“We’re doing what we normally do, which is watch the tape,” Daboll said. “We’ll have staff meetings after this, but we come in, we watch the tape, offense, defense, kicking game as a staff, and then we go meet with the players. That’s where we’re at right now.

“I’m not saying who’s starting or who’s not starting. I’m just saying we’re evaluating everything right now. We’re going through the tape from yesterday, and we’re evaluating every position right now.”

There is, of course, nothing normal about not knowing who your starting quarterback is going to be. Especially when consideration is being given to inserting a rookie first-round pick into the role.

Daboll did admit that the passing game was “the number one thing we need to improve from yesterday.”

On the heels of a 450-yard, three-touchdown performance, Wilson was just 18 of 32 for 160 yards with a pair of interceptions, one a poor decision and the other a poor throw.

Wilson has sandwiched that vintage Week 2 performance with a pair of poor games in which the Giants have scored just one touchdown and totaled 15 points.

“As a collective, everybody’s got to be doing exactly the right stuff, so it’s not all on one guy,” Daboll said. “There’s multiple reasons why certain plays didn’t come out the way we wanted them to come out.

”There’s a number of things, from protection, to routes, to throws, to reads. We have to do a better job collectively to improve the pass game. We had one good game, throwing the football, and then yesterday we took a step back and need to improve in that area.”

For the season Wilson is 65 of 110 (59.1%) for 778 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions. His passer rating of 78.5 would be a career low for a full season.

Dart has played six snaps and has yet to throw an NFL pass.

“We put him in the game for the last two weeks, so we wouldn’t put anybody in the game we don’t feel confident with,” Daboll said.

Is moving to a rookie first-round draft pick at quarterback a decision that needs to approved, or at least run past, ownership?

“Whether it’s the quarterback, the defensive tackle, the receivers, I’m not saying there is, I’m not saying there isn’t [ownership involvement,” Daboll said. “We’re going through a process of what we normally do, talk about personnel. And I’m not saying one way or the other what it’s going to be.

”We’ll cross that bridge later today.“

Read into that whatever you will.
