The Minnesota Vikings made a handful of significant roster moves on Tuesday, so let’s take a moment or two to get you caught up on all of them, shall we?

The most important move the Vikings made was placing running back Aaron Jones on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. This means that Jones will have to miss the next four games, which will encompass the next five weeks because the Vikings will take their bye in Week 6 (injured reserve time is measured by games missed, not weeks missed). This means that Jones will miss the Vikings’ game with Cincinnati this coming Sunday, both games of their European road trip in Weeks 4 and 5, and their matchup with Philadelphia after the bye week.

To add to the running back room, the Vikings brought back our good friend Cam Akers, signing him to the practice squad. This is the third consecutive season that the Vikings have brought Akers into the fold in some way, although this time the move doesn’t involve swapping conditional sixth and seventh-round picks with another team. Akers was with New Orleans for at least a part of this preseason but did not make their final cuts and now rejoins the Vikings as a free agent.

With Jones going on injured reserve, Jordan Mason will officially take over as the lead back, with Ty Chandler and Zavier Scott behind him on the depth chart.

In addition, with J.J. McCarthy’s high ankle sprain meaning at least a short absence for him, the Vikings added to their quarterback room by signing Desmond Ridder. Ridder was drafted in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft by Atlanta and appeared in 19 games for them over the course of two seasons with 17 starts. Atlanta then traded him to the Arizona Cardinals during the 2024 offseason in exchange for wide receiver Rondale Moore. Ridder did not make the Cardinals’ roster out of training camp and wound up on the Las Vegas Raiders’ practice squad. He appeared in six games for the Raiders in 2024, making one start.

Ridder then signed with Cincinnati but did not make their roster coming out of camp. For his career, Ridder has completed 63.6% of his passes for 4,002 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. He took Jones’ spot on the 53-man roster, so the Vikings now have four quarterbacks active: McCarthy, Carson Wentz, Max Brosmer, and Ridder.

I believe those are all of the moves that the Vikings made on Tuesday. If they do anything else, we will bring those moves along to you as soon as we’re able.
