The focus in the aftermath of the New York Giants’ 40-37 overtime loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday has largely been on the Giants’ failure to protect a three-point lead in the final :25 of regulation. The Giants allowed an 18-yard Dak Prescott to Jake Ferguson completion that put the ball at the New York 49-yard line, setting up Brandon Aubrey, the NFL’s premier kicker, for a game-tying 64-yard field goal.
On Monday, Giants head coach Brian Daboll said he would have “liked to be a bit tighter” in coverage on that play, but said there were other chances missed to close out a victory.
“We had a number of opportunities throughout the game in every area to close that game out,” Daboll said. “They hit that 64-yarder, which we knew was in his range there. They had that big play to the middle route right there and liked to be a little bit tighter. But there’s a number of plays that came up throughout the game that if you have one different play there or here, it’s going to make the difference in a game like that.”
Here is the play:
Daboll would not bite when asked if the failure on that Prescott to Ferguson pass was more about scheme or execution.
“Overall, not good enough. We didn’t get a win,” Daboll said. “So look, there’s always certain decisions that you go back and reevaluate.
“There’s always certain techniques or things that could show up on the player side of it. But again, it’s a collective deal between the schemes, the decisions, the playing. Everybody’s involved in it.”
Daboll said several times that the Giants lost the game “collectively.”
“It’s never going to come down to one play. I know that’s the one play that you’re talking about, but collectively, we’ve got to be better,” Daboll said. “We collectively had opportunities and fell short as a collective unit.
“There’s plays we left out there in all three phases.”
Daboll is, right, of course. The Giants were 1 of 5 in the red zone, blew four leads (three in the fourth quarter) and had the ball twice in overtime before losing on a 46-yard game-ending field goal by Aubrey.
