The Miami Dolphins dropped to 0-2 in the 2025 NFL season as they fell to their AFC East rivals, the New England Patriots, 33-27. Miami has four days to figure out what is going on before they take a primetime stage against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday Night Football. This is not the start to the year Miami expected, and not the start the Dolphins fans are tolerating.
The Dolphins did seem to wake up in the second half of Sunday’s game, but it was not enough. They were a half foot away from taking the lead late – running back De’Von Achane appeared to score on a 44-yard reception, but he stepped out as he tried to make a cut – but even if they had won, there would still be a lot of questions swirling around this team.
Here are my three stars of the game – and at least this week, the Dolphins made the list.
First Star
De’Von Achane, running back, Miami Dolphins – Achane is giving his all out there, even when it looks like the game is lost. He scored Miami’s only points last week, and he was back in the endzone this week. He carried the ball 11 times for 30 yards and caught a game-high eight passes for 92 yards and a touchdown. He is the star of the Dolphins so far this season.
Second Star
Drake Maye, quarterback, New England Patriots – The Patriots’ passer was 19-for-23 for 230 yards with two touchdowns, giving him a 137.3 passer rating. This comes a week after he was 30-for-46 for 287 yards with a touchdown and an interception for an 80.6 passer rating. The Patriots got back to running the ball and Maye looked more comfortable in the offense because of it. He added 31 yards on 10 rushes, scoring once and being very decisive about when he pulled down the ball and ran.
Third Star
Malik Washington, wide receiver, Miami Dolphins / Antonio Gibson, running back, New England Patriots – It took 12 seconds of game time for the two returners to put their stamp on the game. I am cheating by giving this to two players, but they both deserve a mention. Washington started the special teams scoring with a 74-yard punt return for the score, only to have Gibson take the ensuing kickoff back 90 yards for a score. It was a crazy crazy roller coaster of special teams highs and lows in 12 seconds.
