Did Lions run up score on Bears? Here’s what Ben Johnson thinks

The Detroit Lions hung 52 points on the Chicago Bears on Sunday afternoon, falling just three points short of tying the franchise record of points scored in a single game. They did set a franchise record with 8.8 yards per play.

But there was a moment in the fourth quarter where it felt like the Lions may be treating this game a little personally. Already up 45-21 with only eight minutes left, the Lions faced a fourth-and-goal from the Bears’ 4-yard line. A field goal would have pushed the lead to 27 point, or at least four scores. Instead, the Lions opted to go for it, and Jared Goff hit Amon-Ra St. Brown for the duo’s third touchdown of the day.

Was the decision a shot at Bears coach Ben Johnson, proving that they didn’t need him to score 50 points? Was it just a shot around the league, letting people know this Lions offense is still going to be potent this week?

We may never know for certain, but Johnson spoke on it after the game, and the former Lions offensive coordinator didn’t take any sort of offense to the move.

“What’s he supposed to do? It’s fourth-and-goal, what do you want him to do?” Johnson said. “He could’ve kicked the field goal. They don’t kick field goals. They go for it there. He was doing what he was supposed to do. That’s what he does.”

That’s ultimately all that matters. If Johnson didn’t take offense to it, then there’s a big nothingburger here. The Bears aren’t the first team to have 50 points scored on them at the hands of the Lions (it happened to the Titans and Jaguars last year), and they almost certainly won’t be the last. Moving on.
