Jalen Carter was ejected from the Eagles season opener before the first snap of the game from scrimmage, but that’s likely not the only punishment he’ll face for spitting on Dak Prescott.
While the league may consider both fines and a suspension for Carter, it bodes well that they haven’t previously suspended a player for spitting at/on another. Even if they try to suspend Carter and make some kind of statement, precedent would make a good argument to appeal the decision.
Carter, obviously, made a mistake but he was also baited into the ordeal by Dak Prescott, who spit first. The NFL should take the totality of the situation into consideration when making their decision. Still, the Eagles’ DT needs to learn how to respond in those moments within the scope of the rules.
Since he left Thursday night’s game before the clock started, Carter essentially already served a de facto one-game suspension, so any additional punishment would likely hit his wallet. Mike Florio of ProFootball Talk suggested a fine of $57,222, which is the amount of his Week 1 game check earnings despite not even playing a single snap.
As far as the Eagles, head coach Nick Sirianni said that he wouldn’t discuss their internal disciplinary plans, but it doesn’t seem likely that they would choose to sit Carter for their Week 2 meeting with the Chiefs.
