Spadaro: 10 observations from the Eagles’ win over the Cowboys – PE.com
Jalen Hurts was on his game in every way. Philadelphia’s quarterback picked up where he left off from his MVP performance in Super Bowl LIX. Hurts was sensational. The Eagles moved up and down the field in the first half and Hurts did it all – he was 9-of-11 for 93 yards passing, using the short game effectively, making good decisions, utilizing tight end Dallas Goedert (4 receptions in first half), and Hurts broke down the Dallas defense with his legs – 6 carries for 48 yards. Hurts finished with two touchdown runs and a team-high 62 yards rushing, darting through the defense and finishing his runs with power. Hurts picked up five first downs running the ball, including a huge one in the final minutes to convert a third-and-3 situation and effectively end the game. It wasn’t easy by any stretch as the Cowboys played tough football, and after the long weather delay, Dallas brought a lot of pressure, and Hurts handled it well. Zero turnovers. It makes such a difference. He finished 19-of-23 passing for 152 yards and took one sack. Really strong performance in the opener.
Roob’s Instant Observations after Eagles win a weird one over Cowboys – NBCSP
5A. You don’t really see it in training camp, because even when he takes off running Jalen Hurts rarely goes into high gear at practice. And you certainly never saw it in the preseason games, because Hurts didn’t play. But, wow, he looked fast and elusive and powerful running the ball Thursday night, and you never know if or when a running quarterback is going to slow down as he gets older and the hits pile up and their bodies just aren’t the same anymore. But Hurts looked just as fast and elusive with the ball in his hands Thursday night as when he was a 22-year-old rookie five years ago. That touchdown – the second one – he just turned the corner on the entire Cowboys defense – and they all knew exactly what he was doing – but he made a beeline for the corner of the end zone and the Cowboys had no chance. And that cut he made on the 16-yarder in the middle of the field? Looked like Barry Sanders on that one. And the keeper to clinch the win? Everybody knew what was about to happen, and still Hurts was able to get beyond the sticks. On a night when a lot didn’t go real smoothly for the offense, Hurts finished with 62 rushing yards on 11 carries (plus three kneel downs) and two touchdowns.
After scoring his first touchdown of the regular season, Jalen Hurts turned to a crowd of thousands and shrugged his shoulders perhaps for an audience of one. The Eagles quarterback is no stranger to paying homage to Michael Jordan, so it was only fitting he did a trademark Jordan celebration with the basketball legend watching from a box in Lincoln Financial Field fresh off an offseason of time spent between the two. Even more fitting, Hurts said, was the 24-20 Eagles win the 27-year-old authored with timely plays both through the air and on the ground with his idol in attendance. “When you have a special guest — a special friend — in attendance there’s only one thing you can do,” Hurts said. “And that’s to win.”

2) The ‘Efficiency’ Award: Jalen Hurts. Hurts was 19 of 23 for 152 yards, 0 TDs, and 0 INTs. He didn’t make mistakes and he made a bunch of plays with his legs, rushing 14 times for 62 yards and 2 TDs. I’m sure there will be some who find fault with Hurts’ performance because he didn’t put up gaudy yardage numbers, but if Hurts plays all season like he did Thursday night, the Eagles are going to win a lot of football games.
Eagles Win A Bizarre Opener – Iggles Blitz
The offense went from hot to not. Hurts played well. I thought he was calm and smart. He didn’t force the ball downfield. He was willing to throw underneath. AJ Brown had one catch and was only targeted that one time. There were multiple plays where Hurts took the snap and looked at AJ, but must not have liked the coverage so he moved on. This will get cleaned up. Hurts finished 19 for 23, the kind of efficiency he needed in this game. He ran for 62 yards and a pair of TDs. The defense was bad in the first half. They were lucky to force a couple of FGs. Penalties were a big issue. The Eagles had 93 penalty yards at halftime, with most coming on defense. Not ideal. Adoree Jackson stunk. He played soft and Dak threw his way over and over. Vic Fangio mixed things up after halftime and had a bit more success, but they need to figure out a solution quickly.

What to make of the QB performance: Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts picked up where he left off, taking advantage of large lanes to score a pair of rushing touchdowns and propel the offense. He now has 16 games with multiple rushing touchdowns, extending his NFL record for a QB (Buffalo’s Josh Allen is second with 12).
Eagles vs. Cowboys: The good, the bad, and the ugly – BGN
Jalen Hurts was masterful in making the Eagles’ offense hum in mid-season form, for most of the game, helped erase an ugly incident just six seconds into the game, when Jalen Carter was ejected for spitting on Cowboys’ quarterback Dak Prescott.
This is bizarre behavior from Carter. Spitting on someone shows the lowest possible amount of respect for your opponent. Sure, the Cowboys and Eagles don’t like it each, but this is still childish. The Cowboys used the 15-yard penalty from Carter to immediately mount a scoring drive. Dallas went 53 yards in six plays, highlighted by a 32-yard pass from Prescott to CeeDee Lamb. Javonte Williams then punched the ball into the end zone on a short TD run. It was 7-0 Cowboys before the Eagles touched the ball. Carter was a monster in the middle of the Eagles’ defensive line during their Super Bowl run. This isn’t the same team without him, but Philly still has tons of weapons on both sides of the ball.
Cowboys-Eagles in 2025 NFL Kickoff Game: What We Learned from Philadelphia’s 24-20 win – NFL.com
Eagles’ offense bogged down late as Brown barely avoids goose egg. Early in the game, Jalen Hurts was calmly picking Dallas apart like it was a 7-on-7 drill, and when he wasn’t doing that, he was gutting the Cowboys with his scrambling. Even with A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith having little impact, the Eagles were moving the ball with ease early. But the hourlong lightning delay also appeared to come at the worst time for the Eagles, with rookie linebacker Jihaad Campbell forcing a massive turnover against ex-Eagle Miles Sanders in the red zone just prior to play being stopped. After play resumed, the Cowboys forced the first of three straight punts, including two three-and-outs. Brown played 54 snaps, ran 23 routes and yet saw nary a target until catching an 8-yard pass to put the game away in the final minute. But the Eagles really hit the wall offensively in the second half, seeing Will Shipley go down in the first half and Landon Dickerson in the second, failing to return after the delay due to a pre-existing back injury. Was the weather to blame? Perhaps. The Eagles will relish the mini-bye after a tougher-than-expected opener.
Cowboys fall to Eagles 24-20, but offer hope for the season – Blogging The Boys
The game was far from perfect, but there were notable positives to take out of this one. Prescott didn’t look like someone who needed preseason reps, Lamb was electric outside of those drops in big moments, the run game actually averaged more per carry than the Eagles, and the defense proved it has some juice. The Cowboys were also the more disciplined team, drawing just four penalties compared to Philadelphia’s nine. There was a lot going on in this game, and it will be remembered for many things, but Brian Schottenheimer’s debut as a head coach was certainly promising. It’s a tough one to lose, but the fact that Dallas was even in it as the two minute warning arrived is better than nearly anyone expected. If the Cowboys play this way every single week, they’re going to win plenty of games.
The NFL’s Kickoff Game Had Everything But Defensive Stars – The Ringer
In the first half alone, the Eagles rushed for 123 yards and three touchdowns against the Cowboys. Quarterback Jalen Hurts had 62 rushing yards and scrambled for two scores. He was 2-for-2 on tush push conversions in the second half, and he sealed the game with a run up the middle on third-and-3 with less than two minutes to play, the kind of play that a team with a defensive closer might have shut down. Defensive tackle Kenny Clark, who came from Green Bay in the Parsons trade, actually played very well, with five tackles. It just didn’t really matter when it counted. And as they were giving up over 4.5 yards per carry to the Eagles, the Cowboys had little semblance of a pass rush. Another part of Jones’s reasoning for the Parsons trade was “the ability to scheme pressure,” and “make up for Micah, because obviously he’s elite at rushing the passer.”
Commanders vs Giants Thursday Injury Report: Three players remain limited in practice – Hogs Haven
Three players were limited for a second day in a row. Dorance Armstrong is the top DE on the roster and has been limited with a knee injury this week. CB Jonathan Jones is also dealing with a hamstring injury. WR Noah Brown suffered a knee injury in June, and continues to practice on a limited basis. He didn’t play in the preseason, but it sounds like he’s still on track to be available to start the season.
Giants-Commanders Thursday injury update: Andrew Thomas held out of practice – Big Blue View
One day after practicing in pads for just the second time, New York Giants left tackle Andrew Thomas was held out of practice on Thursday. Thomas, recovering from Lisfranc surgery, was on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list until just before the final preseason game. He has practiced in limited fashion as the Giants are cautious in ramping him up as he rehabs.
