Giants news, 9/2: Keys to a successful season, Abdul Carter, Tyler Nubin, more headlines

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

From Big Blue View

Other Giant observations

Bold NFL 2025 season predictions: Giants turn to Jaxson Dart early | The Athletic

New York Giants: Jaxson Dart starts by Week 5. Giants brass has told everyone who will listen since the draft that Russell Wilson is the unquestioned starting quarterback and the plan is for first-round pick Jaxson Dart to develop behind the scenes. It sounds awfully familiar to 2019 when the plan was for Eli Manning to start with Daniel Jones on the bench … and then Jones took over after an 0-2 start. Manning was a franchise icon with far more equity than Wilson, who is on his fourth team in five years. If the Giants stumble against a killer early schedule, they won’t wait long to replace Wilson with Dart, who looked ready in the preseason.

Daboll touted for Coach of the Year honor

Brian Daboll tight-lipped on Giants’ No. 2 quarterback as season opener approaches | New York Post

Daboll wouldn’t say who won the position battles to start at right guard – where it appeared Greg Van Roten easily held off challenger Evan Neal – or cornerback. Cor’Dale Flott and Deonte Banks rarely were healthy at the same time after the first two weeks of training camp.

But Daboll’s biggest act of secrecy is trying to hide whether Jaxson Dart or Jameis Winston will be the No. 2 quarterback Sunday against the Commanders.

In fact, Daboll wouldn’t reveal the plan for splitting reps among quarterbacks in practice, beginning with Monday’s closed-to-media walkthrough.

2025 NFL rookies guide: Stat leaders, fantasy picks, top QBs | ESPN.com

Top Defensive Rookie of the Year candidates: 1. Abdul Carter, Edge, New York Giants. This year’s draft was light on top-tier defensive prospects — especially those who will generate the kind of numbers needed to win postseason awards — but Carter has the talent and opportunity to impress. The No. 3 draft pick has a good defensive line around him, including Dexter Lawrence II and Brian Burns. Those two will draw attention from offenses, which will give the speedy Carter a lot of one-on-one looks in passing situations. With 12 sacks last year in his first full season as a pass rusher at Penn State, the arrow is pointing up on what Carter can become as he gets more reps and coaching as an edge defender.

Top fantasy rookies: 9. Cam Skattebo, RB, New York Giants. Skattebo makes up for his lack of top-end speed with excellent contact balance and foot quickness to extend plays on the ground. He ran for 1,711 yards and 21 TDs at Arizona State last season, but he also added 605 yards on 45 receptions; I see upside as a receiver on backfield releases. If he can work his way into the Giants’ running back rotation, he will add fantasy value this season.

NFL Future Hits List: 32 under-the-radar names every true fan should know | The Athletic

New York Giants: Theo Johnson, TE. This isn’t exactly a deep cut — Johnson flashed a lot of potential as a rookie last season despite only catching 29 passes in 12 games. Johnson is an athletic, friendly target (also a big one at 6-foot-6 and 264 pounds) whether the quarterback is Russell Wilson or Jaxson Dart. From The Athletic’s Dan Duggan: “The Giants are counting on Johnson to take a major leap in his second season, although an unspecified injury has sidelined him” since the second preseason game. If Johnson is healthy and the quarterback of choice can throw the ball around, it could be a special season.

Elijah Chatman hopes two-way versatility enough to crack Giants 53-man roster | New York Post

Travis Hunter didn’t start a game on both offense and defense during the NFL preseason, but Elijah Chatman did.

While Hunter is the two-way phenom and Jaguars rookie whose Week 1 debut is much anticipated, Chatman is just hoping for an elevation from the Giants practice squad Sunday against the Commanders after he was the team’s most surprising cut at last week’s trim from 90 to 53 players.

Coach Brian Daboll on what Russell Wilson brings to the team as the starting quarterback

Who is NY Giants’ X-Factor on defense? ‘Fearless’ nickel Dru Phillips takes next step | The Record

Dru Phillips is every bit of a 6-foot-4 and 230-pound menace between the lines, and because of that, there is not anyone in the NFL from whom he would back down.

OK, so here’s the secret: Phillips is only that size in his mind and heart, which affords him the mentality to play like that and squeeze every ounce of desire and punch out of his actual 5-11, 180-pound frame.

2025 NFL projected win totals: Floor & ceiling for each NFC team | NFL.com

New York Giants : Ceiling: 8.0 Floor: 4.0. This defensive front is going to be fun to watch! Dexter Lawrence was double-teamed on 63.8 percent of his pass-rush snaps in 2024, which was the highest rate of any player with 200-plus pass rushes since at least 2018. Don’t see that happening again in 2025 — not with Abdul Carter now roaming off the edge. The Giants have an uphill climb in terms of their top-ranked strength of schedule, but this team forecasts to be much more competitive than its final record might indicate.

NFL team previews 2025: Predictions, rankings, depth charts | ESPN.com

27. New York Giants. Biggest concern: Can the offense score enough? The Giants have raved about veteran quarterback Russell Wilson’s leadership and the effect it will have on the group. But is it enough to turn the 31st-ranked scoring offense into a more effective unit? New York returns 10 of 11 starters on offense, and perhaps its most indispensable player, left tackle Andrew Thomas, was recently activated off the PUP list and didn’t play a preseason snap.

Giants’ biggest non-QB questions include Malik Nabers’ health and Abdul Carter’s rookie rise | New York Daily News

For all of the questions surrounding the Giants’ quarterback room, Nabers might be the most indispensable piece of an offense that — outside of fourth-round rookie running back Cam Skattebo — did not add a significant new skill-position player in the offseason.

“I think my teammates, they want me to voice my opinions,” Nabers said. “They feel like I’m a key factor on this football team … so [I am] just speaking out, trying to get the team going, or if I see anything, just saying something. That just goes to show how much my teammates believe in me.”

This week’s opponent

Deebo Samuel set to benefit from Terry McLaurin back in Commanders’ offense | Commanders.com

Last season, Washington’s offense ranked fifth in scoring and seventh in total offense but 17th in passing offense. Having both McLaurin and Samuel as options for Daniels could help create more opportunities for creativity from offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury.

“This might be one of Deebo’s best years because of Terry,” Smoot said. “Terry gets the coverage pushed to him. It’s just attention. Deebo will benefit from that and blossom from that.”

2025 NFL projected win totals: Floor & ceiling for each NFC team | NFL.com

Ceiling: 13.1 Floor: 8.9. Washington’s ceiling is slightly higher than the Eagles’, so my model sees a world in which the NFC East has a new champion for the 21st consecutive season. One reason my model likes the Commanders? It loves the Laremy Tunsil addition. Last season, the five-time Pro Bowler recorded an 8.3 percent pressure rate, which was tied for the 12th-lowest among left tackles with at least 200 pass-blocking snaps, per Next Gen Stats.
