It’s Labor Day. I hope you’re enjoying some well-deserved time off, drinking your cold beverage of choice and enjoying the fact that Micah Parsons no longer plays in the NFC East. As the Eagles prepare to face against a Parsons-less Dallas Cowboys team next Thursday, I’ll answer some questions about the Birds in a new mailbag.
If you have questions for a future mailbag, you can hit me up on X/Twitter, Blusesky or via email.
Let’s get after it.
Jimbo from North Jersey (via email): I was brought up hating Dallas. Do you think they are still any sort of playoff threat in the NFC after the Micah Parsons trade?
It’s still a talented conference, right? The consensus top four quarterbacks, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow, all play in the AFC, but the NFC has some truly well-rounded rosters. Washington, Detroit, Los Angeles, Tampa Bay, San Francisco, Minnesota and Green Bay, at the very least, are all sound teams. That’s before even getting to the Eagles and their quest to repeat as champions obviously.
Especially on account of playing in the same division as the Birds and the Commanders, Dallas will face 2024 playoff teams in 10 of their 18 games this season. Beyond those divisional matchups come meetings with the Chiefs, Lions, Chargers, Broncos, Vikings and Packers.
That’s brutal and they are, no doubt about it, worse than they were last year with Parsons being dealt to Green Bay.
I say no shot, Jimbo.
I could see Washington taking a step back this year and, even with that regression, those NFC teams I mentioned are all ahead of Dallas in terms of their chances of reaching the postseason. That’s before even mentioning potential frisky teams like Seattle or Chicago as well.
This has “season from hell” written all over it for the Cowboys, but Eagles fans should be worried about Dallas being too bad and landing a top draft pick next spring. Bring on 6-11 and more mediocrity if you ask me!
@spookyst3eve.bsky.social: reaction to the Eagles wearing Kelly Green IN Dallas??
I think I love it.
If you didn’t see, the Eagles announced the three games this year they will wear their glorious Kelly Green throwback alternate uniforms this season: Week 8 at home against the Giants, Week 12 on the road against the Cowboys and Week 18 at home against Washington.
Let’s evaluate the Kelly Green games as a whole and I will certainly give my take on the Dallas road choice, too.
It makes sense to do all these games against the Birds’ three division rivals. People are already juiced up when it comes to Kelly Green, so add some fuel to the fire, right? My only slight holdup is that the Eagles wore these uniforms, which are a facsimile of what the team sported in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the other three franchises were winning a boatload of Super Bowls in that period. The Birds made some noise then, but football belonged to Dallas, Washington and New York in that era. That’s part of the reason I prefer having Midnight Green as the Eagles’ primary color (though Kelly Green as an alternate to mix things up is perfect…). It’s symbolic of winning.
However…
Now that the Eagles are the kings of the division and have been for a quarter of a century though, it can be viewed as payback. The Eagles are now going to kick the crap out of you and they’re going to do it in style for what previous generations of Birds fans endured.
As for wearing it on the road, I dig the change up. In the Kelly Green rebirth period, the Eagles had previously worn these alternates exclusively at home. The Eagles obviously weren’t going to wear throwbacks in Week 1 when unveiling their latest championship banner. It makes all the sense in the world that they’re going to wear what they wore in the Super Bowl win itself.
Additionally, I’m making my first ever trip to Jerry World with a couple of college buddies this year for that game, so it’ll be cool to be decked out in Kelly Green in my own right at the stadium (and on the flight there and back, naturally). That’s fun! I’ve never been to any of the other Kelly Green throwback games as “fan.”
A little Cooper DeJean pick-6 action in the Kelly Greens as a nail in the coffin for Dallas’ hopes of victory that afternoon? That sounds glorious.
@2ajit2tweetbsky.social: Should [the “Dallas, We Hate You” guy] get a statue?
As a reference:
I love this guy. Legend.
I have no clue what he’s up to these days. At the very least, I hope he’s still with us. I’m all for giving random fans that are a part of Eagles lore their due. I wouldn’t say a statue outside Lincoln Financial Field or anything, but how about some random sports bar in the city? Give him a statue outside the Philadium!
