The following players will wear ‘C’ patches on their uniforms this year:
QB Jalen Hurts
RB Saquon Barkley
WR A.J. Brown
OT Lane Johnson
OT Jordan Mailata
LB Zack Baun
S Reed Blankenship
K Jake Elliott
OBSERVATIONS AND THOUGHTS
- This is the same captains list as last year … minus retirees Brandon Graham and Darius Slay … and plus Saquon Barkley, Zack Baun, and Reed Blankenship. So, eight captains this year after seven in 2024.
- Five captains on offense (nearly half of the 11 starters!), two on defense, and one on special teams.
- No surprise to see Barkley and Baun gain captaincy after being awesome on the field last year. They’re taking bigger roles as leaders entering Year 2 of their Eagles tenure.
- Reed Blankenship has been a bigger leader than some might realize; he’s previously served on the team’s leadership council. Interesting that he’s a captain when he’s set to be a free agent after this season. Thought there would’ve been a contract extension for him by now.
- Jalen Hurts is entering his fifth straight year as a team captain. As a result, he’ll now have the gold ‘C’ patch that looks like this:
- I believe Hurts is the only quarterback to ever wear the gold ‘C’ as a member of the Eagles?
- Lane Johnson and Jake Elliott are entering his fourth straight years as team captains. They’ll have four gold stars under their white ‘C’ patches. If they’re back as captains in 2026, they’ll join Hurts in going gold.
- Three-star club: A.J. Brown.
- Two-star club: Jordan Mailata.
- Experienced veterans who were notably not named captains: DeVonta Smith (who was a captain two years ago), Landon Dickerson, Cam Jurgens.
- Some potential future captain candidates include: Smitty, Dickerson, Jurgens, Jalen Carter, Nolan Smith, Jalyx Hunt, Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean.
