Discussion: What has been the most surprising Lions cut in the first wave?

While the Detroit Lions have likely made most—if not, all—of their roster cuts, only 18 have leaked to the public. That leaves 20 more moves to come, and a lot of mystery still out there for Lions fans.

But a lot of tricky decisions have already been made public. Many of the cuts already leaked have been to players we thought could land on either side of the roster bubble, including Jackson Meeks, Dan Skipper, Nate Lynn, Myles Adams, Anthony Pittman, Erick Hallett, Nick Whiteside, and Ian Kennelly. I’ve already seen five players I had on my final 53-man roster prediction get cut.

So today’s Question of the Day is:

What has been the most surprising Lions cut so far?

My answer: It has to be Dan Skipper. While I also had Meeks, Lynn, Hallett, and Kennelly on my 53-man roster, all four of those I had firmly on the roster bubble. They were essentially four of the final players that made it on my hypothetical team.

With Skipper, though, I never really considered cutting the eight-year veteran. He had his struggles in training camp, no doubt, but I didn’t think there was someone who challenged him for the backup tackle role.

We obviously don’t know exactly how the Lions see their tackle room yet. It’s possible the Lions do some roster gymnastics and Skipper will eventually return to the 53-man roster as OT3. However, I do think there is also a very realistic possibility that Jamarco Jones has won the job. I know the Lions were very intrigued by him, and he started to get some work with the first-team offense when Taylor Decker needed a break. Jones battled through injury for much of camp, which made him a difficult evaluation from afar. But he does have seven games of starting experience and spent all of 2024 on the Lions’ practice squad.

The most surprising outcome of the offensive tackle room would be if the Lions believe Giovanni Manu has grown enough to take over the backup tackle job. I think that is highly unlikely based on the fact that Manu has repped almost exclusively at left tackle, and, in my opinion, has not progressed enough to trust with that critical role.
