Dolphins roster cuts begin with running backs, cornerbacks released

The Miami Dolphins have started their roster moves to drop their roster size from the preseason’s 90-man limit to the regular season’s 53-man limit. The NFL requires all teams meet the limitation by 4 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday, but teams will start making the roster moves throughout Monday and Tuesday to be ahead of the deadline.

Miami started their moves Monday morning with the release of running back Aaron Shampklin. The release was first reported by NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe. Shortly after that move was reported, the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson added running back Mike Boone to the cut list. The release of both depth running backs, who were signed during training camp due to injuries, leaves Miami with one healthy running back, rookie Ollie Gordon II, and two runners who are in recovery from injury, starter De’Von Achane and Jaylen Wright.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the team is releasing cornerback Mike Hilton, a move that comes with some surprise. Hilton was listed as the starting nickel cornerback on the team’s preseason depth chart and it was widely assumed he had locked that spot down, but he did not get many reps with the top unit during training camp and he seemed to have been surpassed by rookie Jason Marshall, Jr. With the release, Marshall should be locked in as the team’s top nickel cornerback.

Jackson reported on another move for the Dolphins shortly thereafter, adding offensive lineman Jackson Carman to the list. He then added defensive lineman Ben Stille, cornerback Ethan Robinson, and offensive lineman Addison West to his reporting.

As of 11:30 a.m. Eastern on Monday, Miami is down to 83 players on the roster with 30 cuts remaining to be made.
