The official snap counts from the Philadelphia Eagles’ preseason win over the New York Jets are in. Let’s take a look.
OFFENSE
Kyle McCord was the Eagles’ sole quarterback on Friday night. No Dorian Thompson-Robinson. The question is no longer McCord vs. DTR. It’s McCord vs. other potential QB3 options.
Trevor Keegan playing nearly the entire game doesn’t seem like a great sign for him. Maybe they’re not ready to give up on the 2024 draft pick but it seems like he could be expendable. By contrast, Myles Hinton, Darian Kinnard, and Kenyon Green seem like better bets to make the roster and they didn’t play as much.
Montrell Johnson Jr. looked good as the Eagles’ lead back. But not so good that they must keep him.
Terrace Marshall Jr. led the Eagles in receiving but he was also playing late into the game, so, that’s not a good sign for his stock.
Ainias Smith, who had two drops, remained in the game slightly longer than Darius Cooper, for whatever that’s worth.
Brett Toth not playing the entire game seems like a good sign for how the Eagles view him. It remains to be seen if he’ll make the initial 53-man roster but good chance he’ll be on the Week 1 roster. And perhaps starting at left guard if Landon Dickerson isn’t ready to suit up against the Dallas Cowboys.
Nick Muse’s special teams playing time really stands out. The Eagles got a long look at him there. Ditto for Cameron Latu, who has really stood out on that unit but not on offense.
Is it a bad sign that Kylen Granson only took one special teams rep? Or were the Eagles preserving him? He already does have a good deal of career ST snaps.
The Eagles didn’t need to get a long look at 33-year-old veteran Kendall Lamm. He didn’t look great but he could be on the roster anyway.
Interesting to see that Drew Kendall didn’t play much. The Eagles must have decided they’ve liked what they’ve seen and didn’t need to risk injury.
John Metchie III only practiced twice since being traded to the Eagles so his role was unsurprisingly limited. They clearly built in a target for him on the first play, which he caught. He later dropped a pass on a scramble drill. He did not play on special teams.
Ben VanSumeren was a pregame captain and he didn’t play much. He had one target result in an 11-yard reception. Spoiler alert: I’m going to have BVS on my 53-man roster prediction.
Not much playing time for bottom of the roster guys Taylor Morin (who I could see making the practice squad), Ife Adeyi, and ShunDerrick Powell (not included in the picture above but he played two snaps on offense and zero on special teams).
DEFENSE
Mac McWilliams first played on the outside and later shifted inside to nickel cornerback. Earlier this week, McWilliams took reps across first-team, second-team, and third-team units during the same practice. The Eagles clearly want to get him more experience. Seems like they’re fast-tracking his development since they know they might need to rely on the Day 3 rookie playing this season.
Dallas Gant deserves another shout for his impressive goal line denial on a two-point conversion run that prevented the Jets from tying the game up. Strong practice squad contender.
Eli Ricks might’ve played his last game for the Eagles.
Does Parry Nickerson make the roster? Don’t think the 30-year-old will have a hot market if he gets cut. The Birds should be able to bring him back on the practice squad. Great interception on Friday night, though.
Smael Mondon Jr. got banged up at one point but it didn’t appear to be a serious injury.
Jakorian Bennett allowed multiple receptions despite playing less than half of the game. He did play tight coverage.
How about that forced fumble from Antwaun Powell-Ryland Jr.? Signs of life!
Ty Robinson did not log a stat in the box score. He did help to collapse the pocket to prevent the quarterback from being able to step up on Patrick Johnson’s sack.
Chance Campbell played a decent amount in what will likely be his one and only game as a member of the Eagles.
Byron Young, Ogbo Okoronkwo, Patrick Johnson, and Gabe Hall could all make the roster. From that group, feeling least confident about Ogbo as a vested veteran. Though Johnson is also a vested vet now.
Lance Dixon got banged up late in the game.
I wonder if the Eagles might trade Jeremiah Trotter Jr. They shouldn’t be in a rush to do so and I don’t know what his value is like. But he’s had a strong enough summer to be a starter for a number of teams, just not this one. And he isn’t the biggest special teams contributor. Plus, Mondon Jr. also had a good summer and Nakobe Dean will be returning from injury at some point.
Just a little bit of playing time for Azeez Ojulari, who currently seems primed to play the fourth most edge rusher snaps for the Eagles in 2025.
Lewis Cine had a pretty quiet summer but he did make a nice catch on a terrible interception thrown by the Jets’ depth quarterback. He also got banged up again.
Jereme Robinson seemed to play pretty well for a guy who only joined the roster earlier on the same day. He was running around out there.
Were the Eagles trying to hide Brandon Johnson, who started at nickel in the second preseason game? They also could’ve been taking it easy with his workload since he was recently dealing with an injury.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Avery Williams didn’t get any offensive snaps in the Eagles’ second preseason game, either. He returned one kick for 24 yards on Friday night.
A.J. Woods was the only defender limited to special teams snaps only.
Active night for the specialists with Jake Elliott taking and making four field goals and one extra point attempt. Braden Mann had six punts, bringing him up to 17 over three preseason games. That’s 31.5% of the punts he attempted in all of the 2024 regular season.
DID NOT PLAY
EDGE Joshua Uche, QB Jalen Hurts, WR Jahan Dotson, EDGE Nolan Smith, WR DeVonta Smith, CB Kelee Ringo, CB Adoree’ Jackson, WR A.J. Brown, QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson, QB Tanner McKee, LB Nakobe Dean, S Sydney Brown, S Andrew Mukuba, RB Saquon Barkley, CB Quinyon Mitchell, RB Will Shipley, RB AJ Dillon, LB Jihaad Campbell, S Reed Blankenship, DB Cooper DeJean, DB Tariq Castro-Fields, C Cam Jurgens, LB Zack Baun, OG Tyler Steen, EDGE Jalyx Hunt, OT Lane Johnson, OT Laekin Vakahlahi, OT Jordan Mailata, OG Landon Dickerson, OL Matt Pryor, TE Grant Calcaterra, TE Dallas Goedert, DT Jordan Davis, DT Moro Ojomo, DT Jalen Carter
The Eagles rested their starters and a lot of key backups.
Missed the game due to injury: Ringo, Mukuba, and Castro-Fields.
Dean is still on the active/PUP list.
DTR and Vakalahi were healthy enough to play but just didn’t. Vakalahi only played in one preseason game this summer (the first one) and the Eagles didn’t trust him to play after that. The international exemption will have to wait until August 2026 to see game action again.
