The Eagle’ final preseason game will be the difference between making the team and being cut for a handful of players. While some Eagles rookies like Jihaad Campbell and Andrew Mukuba are more than safe and potentially have locked up starting roles, plenty of other players face far more precarious situations.
Will Kyle McCord lock up the QB3 spot?
The Eagles have the luxury of having a great QB1 in Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts and what seems like a really good QB2 in Tanner McKee. It’s a bonus, then, that any quarterback intrigue is squarely on that third spot. Dorian Thompson-Robinson came to the Eagles via the Kenny Pickett trade but has failed to separate himself from rookie Kyle McCord. McCord had a rough first preseason game but bounced back with some nice plays against the Browns. It’s possible McCord plays a whole half against the Jets, giving him a real chance to win a roster spot.
Can Darius Cooper seize on the Johnny Wilson injury?
Johnny Wilson going down for the year sucks. Not only was the big-bodied receiver promising in his first season, the Eagles were thin at wide receiver after their top two guys anyway. Darius Cooper had a quiet second preseason game after a breakout debut two weeks ago. Can Cooper bounce back and push to make it as one of the receivers on this team?
Will Ty Robinson string together a consistent game?
The Eagles don’t need Ty Robinson to be a world beater as a rookie. They have two very, very good defensive tackles for that. However, they do need him to be solid when called up. Robinson has struggled to make any positive impact through two games. It would be nice to see some positive play from him.
Mac McWilliams has a real shot at starting in his rookie season.
The Eagles find themselves in a bad situation with the second perimeter cornerback spot. Kelee Ringo has not taken a step forward and Adoree’ Jackson’s best years are behind him. While they’ve entertained Cooper DeJean playing on the outside in base defense, it mitigates his strengths when the team is in nickel.
McWilliams, meanwhile, has played really solid football at outside corner. He was projected as a slot CB when he was drafted but he outplays his size on the perimeter. Though it’s not an ideal situation, McWilliams could play his way into meaningful snaps with another strong showing against New York.
