Indianapolis Colts offensive tackle Blake Freeland appeared to suffer a gruesome, severe leg injury during Saturday’s preseason loss against the Green Bay Packers.
His head coach, Shane Steichen, confirmed postgame that it’s a fractured leg:
Freeland came in relief of injured veteran starter Braden Smith at right tackle on Saturday and has been competing throughout training camp and preseason for the team’s top backup swing-tackle role.
He suffered the injury after run blocking in the 2nd quarter, and his right leg had to be stabilized as trainers tended to him, with teammates gathering around to offer their support.
The former 2023 4th round pick of Indianapolis had appeared in 25 total games through his first two seasons with the Colts, making all nine of his career starts as a rookie back in 2023.
He is currently listed as the top backup at left tackle behind starter Bernhard Raimann on the team’s depth chart.
Speaking of Raimann, he suffered an ankle injury during Thursday’s joint training camp practice against the Packers. With Smith leaving the game because of a groin injury, the Colts are even more banged up at offensive tackle collectively.
With just Jalen Travis, a rookie 2025 4th round pick of the Colts, as the only really viable backup solution at offensive tackle—although to be fair, 2nd-year pro Matt Goncalves could potentially kick over to right tackle and say Dalton Tucker could start at right guard, Indianapolis could use another competent backup offensive tackle.
As 53-man active roster cuts loom in a few weeks, I would expect the Colts to be vigilant at offensive tackle on the waiver wire, scouring for any potential backup upgrades.
