There are a lot of unwritten rules in sports. You don’t step on the line in baseball, you don’t shoot into an empty net after the whistle in hockey, and you don’t hit the quarterback in practice in the NFL.
On Wednesday, there was a small scuffle at the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice between Shemar Stewart and free agent guard signee Lucas Patrick after the rookie edge rusher accidentally hit Burrow, which is a big no-no.
After Friday’s practice, Stewart was asked about what he said to Burrow after the practice was over. He said he apologized to the quarterback and let him know it wasn’t his intention. When asked what Burrow’s response was, he said the superstar “kept it cool.”
“You know, it’s cool, as long as you do it on Sundays too,” Burrow said, according to the rookie.
The 2024 Bengals finished with the eighth-fewest sacks throughout the regular season, and their inability to get to the quarterback was partially responsible for their 9-8 record that kept them out of the playoffs. With Trey Hendrickson, who had half of the team’s sacks and led the league, still not practicing and holding in as he negotiates an extension with the front office, the Bengals could definitely use another productive pass rusher.
Hopefully, Stewart is as good as he looks at times in practice.
