New York Giants news for Thursday

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

From Big Blue View

Other Giant observations

Presser Points: Takeaways from Coach Brian Daboll | Giants.com

Daboll was asked if he wants to see “desperation” from his team this week. “I want to see consistency like we talk about every week. Go in, prepare the right way, come out, play a good football game, do good in situations, play together. Each week is its own week, and we’ll just focus on the Browns this week.”

Safety Tyler Nubin has played 100 percent of the defensive snaps so far this year, and his skills as a communicator have stood out to defensive passing game coordinator/DBs coach Jerome Henderson. The second-rounder is already third on the team with 12 total tackles.

Fourth-round tight end Theo Johnson has played 83 percent of the offensive snaps, far outpacing Chris Manhertz (36 percent) and Daniel Bellinger (16 percent). Johnson has only tallied 18 yards on one reception, but that he’s on the field so much so early is encouraging.

Brian Burns: Inside rush plan, realizing NY Giants purpose | The Record

When Burns starts to study an opponent, he doesn’t write anything down at first. He’ll grab his tablet and just watch two or three games to get a feel of the overall offense.

Burns prefers to initially visualize things, so he pays attention to set points a quarterback may take on certain drop backs, cadence and body language of the offensive linemen that will be tasked to block him. There’s also importance placed on how a team will look to attack the Giants, especially up front in certain circumstances.

Andrew Thomas’ Giants challenge all too familiar for Joe Thomas | New York Post

“Team success brings individual success,” Andrew Thomas said. “The mentality is to win because you are winning for a reason. If you are not winning, try to figure out how to win. That’s where we’re at right now. In 2022, we went to the playoffs, it was the most fun I’ve had. It’s breaking that mentality of losing and having the mindset that we’re going to finish and play to a standard.”

For the first time in his career, Devin Singletary broke the double-digit mark for forced missed tackles as a rusher. His 10 were the most of any runner in Week 2.

Panic meter for every 0-2 NFL team: How worried should each franchise be? | PFF

New York Giants: Extremely high. Shane Bowen’s defense could fare better as the season progresses, especially expecting more from its three-tiered talent. But it’s hard to fathom that Big Blue’s offense will improve much from its ranking of 26th in expected points allowed per play. With nothing but formidable matchups upcoming, things could get ugly fast — potentially leading to Jones’ benching.

Will Giants fire Brian Daboll, Joe Schoen? Keep an eye on this key factor (beyond just losing) | NJ.com

But first, they need to decide the fate of Daboll and Schoen, who simply have not shown — early this season — the “significant improvement” Mara said he wanted to see. And if fan apathy starts creeping in, amid more losing, Daboll and Schoen are in serious trouble.

The game to watch, after Cleveland, is next Thursday night at home against the Cowboys, who beat the Giants 40-0 in Week 1 last season at MetLife Stadium. An 0-3 Giants team losing to Dallas on that Thursday night in a stadium full of Cowboys fans would surely infuriate Mara.

This week’s opponent

David Njoku unlikely to return to Browns lineup this week | Pro Football Talk

Njoku missed last Sunday’s win over the Jaguars with an ankle injury and head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters at a Wednesday press conference that he is unlikely to return to action this week.

Stefanski also said that he’s hopeful cornerback Denzel Ward’s shoulder injury will allow him to play more than the 11 snaps he was able to play last Sunday. Tackle Dawand Jones (knee) and running back Pierre Strong (hamstring) are not expected to practice on Wednesday.

Denzel Ward is one of four defenders to have forced four pass incompletions on the season along with Quinyon Mitchell, Benjamin St-Juste and Paulson Adebo.

RB Royce Freeman signs with Cleveland Browns | USAToday.com

The Cleveland Browns have signed free agent running Royce Freeman to their practice squad, the team announced Tuesday. Freeman will provide depth behind fellow Browns running backs Jerome Ford, D’Onta Foreman and Pierre Strong.
