Former Philadelphia Eagles safety and Super Bowl LIX champion C.J. Gardner-Johnson was carted off the field at Houston Texans training camp practice on Thursday morning.
More details via Pro Football Talk:
Reporters at the team’s practice at the Greenbrier in West Virginia said Gardner-Johnson went down while defending wide receiver John Metchie during a drill. Gardner-Johnson stayed down while being examined for an apparent leg injury.
Teammates circled around Gardner-Johnson and took knees while a cart was brought onto the field to take him inside. Those at the practice noted that Gardner-Johnson did not appear to be able to put weight on the injured leg.
It’s typically not a very good sign when a player has to be carted off.
Then again, CJGJ avoided a major injury the last time he was carted off the field as a member of the Detroit Lions in 2023.
Hopefully he’s OK. It’s never fun to see a player’s season end in August. Even more so when it’s an old friend.
Your mileage may vary when it comes to rooting for CJGJ now that the outspoken playmaker is no longer a member of the Eagles. Some fans definitely miss him. Others, perhaps not so much. Regardless, everyone should be able to agree it’s not cool to see him get hurt.
As a reminder, the Eagles surprisingly traded CJGJ to the Texans back in March. In return, they received Kenyon Green (who might not make the Eagles’ 53-man roster) and a one round improvement on Day 3 in the 2026 NFL Draft (traded a sixth-round pick for a fifth-round pick).
Meanwhile, it still remains to be seen who’ll replace CJGJ as the starting safety next to Reed Blankenship.
