Observations from the NovaCare Complex.

Today marked the third Philadelphia Eagles training camp practice ahead of the 2025 NFL season. The non-padded session lasted for about an hour and 40 minutes. Here’s what I observed at the NovaCare Complex.

EAGLES PRACTICE NOTES

  • JALEN HURTS UPDATE: This was easily Hurts’ worst practice of the offseason. That’s not to say he was terrible … more that it was a mixed bag. The good included multiple completions over the middle to Dallas Goedert, two short red zone touchdown passes to DeVonta Smith, and a dime to A.J. Brown down the right sideline. The bad included more incompletions today than the rest of his previous practices combined, underthrowing Brown deep, throwing into the flyswatter dummy (simulating a leaping defensive lineman) in 7-on-7, having another pass deflected in 11-on-11, overthrowing DeVonta Smith while rolling out right, and leaving a pass to Jahan Dotson too wide of the field for him to get both feet in bounds. We’ll see if Hurts bounces back on Monday.

  • EAGLES INJURY REPORT: Jalen Carter (shoulder) has yet to practice this summer. Kenyon Green (knee) was upgraded to limited participation after missing the first two practices. Jihaad Campbell (shoulder) and Cam Jurgens (back) were listed as limited again. Andrew Mukuba seemed to get banged up late in practice. Nakobe Dean is still on the active/PUP list.
  • JIHAAD CAMPBELL RISING: For the first time this summer, the Eagles’ 2025 first-round pick rotated in with the first-team defense. Jeremiah Trotter Jr. still took the majority of reps next to Zack Baun but Campbell’s stock is apparently rising. Speaking after practice, Campbell said that he’ll be able to participate in the Eagles’ first padded practice on Tuesday.

  • POSITION BATTLE UPDATE — CORNERBACK: A little interesting to see that Adoree’ Jackson, not Kelee Ringo, was up first as the first-team right cornerback in 11-on-11. It doesn’t necessarily matter a ton because Jackson and Ringo are rotating the starting RCB reps over the course of multiple team periods. But I would’ve thought Ringo would’ve been up first today. By contrast, the Eagles went back to Sydney Brown as the first-team nickel safety like he was on Day 1 after Andrew Mukuba got the first crack on Day 2. Jackson was also first up at RCB in 7-on-7 drills today. In terms of performance, Jackson hasn’t stood out much, which is maybe a good thing. Ringo stood out on Saturday but not in the most encouraging way. A.J. Brown wanted a flag called on Ringo for interfering with him on a deep ball underthrown by Hurts. Ringo allowed a downfield catch to Brown along the right sideline, though his tight coverage was beat by a really good throw and catch. Tough to crush Ringo for not being able to shut down Brown because, well, Brown is pretty unstoppable. Still, would be nice to see some more positive Ringo reps soon.
  • POSITION BATTLE UPDATE — SAFETY: As noted directly above, Brown was up first as the starting safety in nickel (still Cooper DeJean in rarely used base). But Brown and Mukuba are still very much rotating. And it was Mukuba who had a role on the field in the Eagles’ dime package, with both him and DeJean playing on the inside. Mukuba trailed on a play where Tanner McKee hit a diving Danny Gray over the middle for a completion.
  • DEFENSIVE LINE DISRUPTION: Nolan Smith generated some pressure while going up against Lane Johnson. Moro Ojomo continues to flash by being disruptive in the backfield. Jordan Davis deflected a Hurts pass at the line of scrimmage.
  • DALLAS GOEDERT POISED FOR A BIG YEAR? Hurts sure has been throwing to his top tight end a lot. Goedert has been catching everything thrown his way.
  • QUINYON MITCHELL CONTINUES TO BE LOCKDOWN: On the first day of camp, Mitchell prevented a Hurts deep completion to Brown. On the third day of camp, Mitchell prevented a Hurts deep completion to DeVonta. Mitchell is looking really good ahead of Year 2.
  • WIDE RECEIVERS BEHIND THE TOP TWO: Terrace Marshall took at least one first-team rep during a red zone drill. Danny Gray made a nice diving grab. I’m still not ready to say they’re going to overtake Jahan Dotson but they’ve stood out more to me this offseason. Also, Ainias Smith continues to be pretty invisible.
  • TANNER MCKEE COOLS OFF: Hurts wasn’t the only Eagles quarterback to have his worst offseason practice; McKee also wasn’t as sharp as normal. QB2 overthrew Grant Calcaterra at one point and had a pick in the end zone dropped by Parry Nickerson, who did pushups after the play as punishment for not catching the ball. McKee also had a pass knocked down by Sydney Brown.
  • DORIAN THOMPSON-ROBINSON HEATS UP: One Eagles quarterback who did have their best day is DTR. He made some accurate throws over the middle to beat the defense. He also took a second-team rep over McKee at one point, though it was just one and I don’t think he’s actually pushing for that job. Or even going to make the roster since Kyle McCord has been better. But, hey, credit to DTR for making the most of his limited reps on Saturday.
  • SPEAKING OF KYLE MCCORD: The rookie quarterback isn’t very fearful, which is nice to see. He ripped a bullet over the middle into tight coverage for a completion. He had a nice completion to Elijah Cooks to end practice.
  • CAN YOU SMELL WHAT ELIJAH IS COOKING? For the uninitiated, Cooks is a 6’4”, 215 pound wide receiver who went undrafted in 2023, spent some time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and then joined the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad earlier this year. Cooks made a really nice catch on the final play of practice by Mossing B.J. Mayes for a back shoulder grab down the left sideline. Nice ball by McCord to give him the chance to make the play. After the reception, Cooks — who is wearing Zach Ertz’s old No. 86 — signaled for a first down and received praise from his fellow wide receivers. Gray was first to run up to him to celebrate. Cooks is a long shot to make the roster but maybe he can earn a practice squad spot. Could be someone to keep an eye on in the preseason games.
  • JAKE THE MAKE: Jake Elliott made all of his field goal attempts, including two kicks from 53 yards out. Mark my words: Elliott is going to bounce back this year.
  • LONG SNAPPING ISSUES? Charley Hughlett had a bad snap that was high of Braden Mann but was fixed by the holder. We’ll see if this continues to be an issue.
  • UDFA TO WATCH: Montrell Johnson seems to have some juice. He runs well. The Eagles will probably only keep three running backs and he likely won’t be one of them. But the Florida alumnus could be RB4 as a member of the practice squad.
  • NOT LONG FOR THE ROSTER? Trevor Keegan, playing as the third-team center, looked frustrated after failing to pick up a stunt.
  • IT’S LOUD: For the first time I can remember, the Eagles pumped in crowd noise at a training camp practice at the NovaCare Complex. It sounded horrible.
  • WHAT’S BETTER THAN ONE VINCE LOMBARDI TROPHY? What a sight:

UP NEXT: Eagles players have Sunday off before returning to practice at 10:00 AM on Monday morning. You can find more of the Eagles’ training camp schedule by clicking here.
