Las Vegas Raiders minroity owner didn’t want the Raiders to sign quarterback Sam Darnold
The Las Vegas Raiders added Tom Brady as the minority owner in 2024. With Brady under the organization, it has helped with the Raider’s image around the league, having a seven-time Super Bowl Champion helping build the franchise.
Pete Carroll and John Spytek were the first editions connected to Brady’s presence. The former New England Patriots quarterback was also part of the free agency process. When it came to the quarterback position, the Raiders had two options. They eventually went with Geno Smith, but Sam Darnold was not an option for Brady. Mike Silver of The Athletic had the scoop on the Raiders quarterback situation.
“The Seahawks’ pursuit of Darnold snuck up on many NFL observers and proceeded in rapid-fire fashion,” Silver wrote. “While some believed the Las Vegas Raiders would try to sign Darnold, minority owner Tom Brady — a seven-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback whose opinion held great sway — was not in favor of that approach, according to a source familiar with the franchise’s internal discussions. Meanwhile, Smith, seeking a lucrative extension from the Seahawks, reacted coldly to the team’s initial offer. The Raiders, having recently hired former Seattle coach Pete Carroll, emerged as a potential trade partner.”
Brady must have been a fan of Smith’s play in the last three seasons. His consistency at the quarterback position is something the team has been missing, and Darnold was more of a wild card for a high price. It makes sense why the team decided to move in the direction of a trade with the Seahawks.
