That seems like a longshot

When the New York Giants added rookie free agent running back Dante Miller to their 90-man roster during the 2024 offseason, there was a mix of excitement and curiosity.

Excitement because there are not many human beings who have run 4.27 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

Curiosity because Miller was a mystery. He played sparingly during a five-year college career at Columbia and South Carolina and had just one productive season. That was 2021-22 at Columbia, where he ran 145 times for 814 yards (5.6 yards per carry) with 4 touchdowns.

The Giants took a long look at Miller last preseason. He led the team in carries (26) and yards rushing (108) in the preseason, averaging 4.2 yards per carry. He also caught two passes for 7 yards. The Giants also worked Miller as a return man, though he never got to return a kickoff or punt in a preseason game.

Miller spent the season on the Giants’ practice squad, appearing in two games on special teams.

Miller appears to be facing even longer odds of being part of the 53-man roster this time around.

Tyrone Tracy Jr. established himself as the Giants’ RB1 a year ago, compiling more than 1,100 total yards as a rookie. The Giants drafted a battering ram in Cam Skattebo in Round 4 to complement Tracy. Veteran Devin Singletary, who began last season as the starting running back, is still on the roster. Eric Gray, a 2023 fifth-round pick, is a depth player.

Miller is now a 26-year-old with no real NFL resume, and a thin collegiate one. Since that productive 2021-22 season at Columbia, he had just six carries at South Carolina in 2022-23 and the touches he got in the preseason last year. That is not a lot of football played over the past few seasons.

Making the 53-man roster and becoming a productive part of the Giants’ backfield is a mountain Miller might not be able to climb.
