The Miami Dolphins add a veteran quarterback to the 53-man roster.
With starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa out for the foreseeable future, it was inevitable that the Miami Dolphins would bring in another veteran quarterback. Here’s a direct quote from Mike McDaniel during his September 13th press conference.
“I think the way to best articulate where we’re at is the team and the organization are very confident in Skylar (Thompson) and see there was a reason he was our backup quarterback. That being said, we will bring in someone. We’re just evaluating the pros and cons for the different situations and getting through all those possibilities to do the best thing for the team, but as it stands today, I’m expecting that Skylar is the next man up.”
Today, after a few days of weighing the pros and cons, the Dolphins did exactly what McDaniel said they would—adding 26-year-old Tyler ‘Snoop’ Huntley from the Baltimore Ravens practice squad. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero was the first to report the signing.

Huntley, 26, has a 3-6 career record as a starting QB in the NFL. During his four seasons with the Ravens, he completed 221 of 342 passes for eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. Huntley was with the Cleveland Browns earlier in the preseason but re-signed with the Ravens before the start of the 2024 NFL season.
He will now be on the Dolphins 53-man roster for at least three weeks. However, as McDaniel touched on during a recent presser, he plans to have three quarterbacks on the roster moving forward. The question now is, can Thompson hold onto the starting job? Or should we expect Huntley to supplant him when caught up with the playbook?
I lean toward the latter, but with three years of familiarity with McDaniel’s offense, Thompson will have every opportunity to prove he’s ready. Much like Huntley will have every chance to prove he’s the better NFL QB once he becomes familiar with Miami’s high-octane offense.
