New York Giants headlines for Friday

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

Other Giant observations

That’s a total of 11 position groups. Six are better than they were at this time last year, five are the same. None are perceived as worse. Four of the five defensive position groups are improved.

That should, theoretically, make the Giants a better team in 2025, which they hope leads to more wins. It seems pretty clear the Giants have a more talented roster.

Ranking the NFL divisions by strength heading into 2025 | PFF

5. NFC EAST: EAGLES, COMMANDERS, COWBOYS, GIANTS Cumulative over/under win total: 34

The NFC East sent both representatives to the NFC championship game last January, but those two teams — the Eagles and Commanders — are carrying most of the weight for the division as a whole.

As for the Giants, their quarterback situation remains unresolved, with three players currently in contention for the starting role. The offensive line hasn’t seen meaningful improvement, which raises concerns regardless of who starts under center. However, the additions of Paulson Adebo and Jevon Holland should help bolster a secondary that ranked 26th in coverage grade (52.5) last season.

Battle: WR4. Technically, the next man up is 2023 third-round pick Jalin Hyatt, but he’s coming off a lackluster season in which he tallied just eight catches for 62 yards.

The Giants’ approach in undrafted free agency — five of their 13 UDFAs, including the three highest-paid, were receivers — made it clear they’re still searching to beef up that position. The Giants recently hosted former Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Gabe Davis for a visit last week, Schoen confirmed on the “Up and Adams” show last week. Daboll and Schoen were in Buffalo for the first two years of Davis’ career. But the GM mentioned Davis’ injury history on the show. Davis tore his meniscus in Week 11, and Jacksonville recently cut him with a failed physical designation, so it seems Davis is likely still not fully recovered.

New York Giants: QB Russell Wilson Key Metric: 97.3 deep passing grade in 2024 (Highest in NFL)

Russell Wilson brings his patented moon ball to Gotham City after leading the NFL with a 97.3 deep passing grade last season. Even with the addition of superstar wide receiver Malik Nabers, the Giants struggled to throw the ball downfield last season. As a team, they recorded just a 67.4 deep passing grade in 2024, 4th-worst in the NFL.

Could Giants get more out of Kayvon Thibodeaux by playing him less? | NJ.com

Might more breathers benefit Thibodeaux, the fifth overall pick in 2022? He has looked mostly solid but not really spectacular through three seasons. He certainly has not consistently looked like the No. 5 overall pick. And now, Carter could wind up taking some of his playing time.

In 2023, Thibodeaux played 87% of the snaps. Last season, he played at least 77% of the snaps in eight of his 12 games. For the year in 2024, he wound up with 75% of the snaps in the games that he played. So he was on the field considerably less often.

11 Most Important Rookie vs. Veteran Position Battles to Watch This Offseason | Bleacher Report

Abdul Carter vs. Kayvon Thibodeaux. Part of the reason the New York Giants spent the third overall pick on Carter is that he’s the defense’s long-term plan at the edge defender spot opposite Brian Burns. That job belonged to Thibodeaux last season, but the 2022 fifth overall selection is only under contract through 2026 after the club accepted his fifth-year option.

While the rookie offers more athletic upside and potential as a pass-rusher, Thibodeaux’s run defense could give him an upper hand. That was one of the few concerns about Carter heading into the draft.
