The Linc – Quinyon Mitchell says he’s confident, not cocky

Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 9/15/24.

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links …

Spadaro: Eagles ready for an ‘extra shot of adrenaline’ Monday night – PE.com
Mitchell started in his first NFL game and, by all accounts, played well with two passes defensed and five total tackles (he was also called for a pass interference penalty). He expected to be challenged by the Packers and that was the case and Mitchell held up well. He challenged receivers, had good technique with his tackling, and played fine in coverage. And when he made a play he talked. “I wouldn’t say it’s being cocky,” he said. “I’m a confident person. I’m very confident in myself and in my teammates around me, and that’s the way I play out on the field. Everything is play to play, now game to game. The first game is behind me and Monday is going to be the next one up. The receivers here have helped prepare me for this moment, so shout out to them.”

Eagles-Falcons Game Preview: 5 questions and answers with the enemy – BGN
2 – The Falcons didn’t allow a touchdown in Week 1. How confident are you in Atlanta’s defense slowing down the Eagles’ offense? […] I think they’re going to need to force some turnovers to prevent this one from being a lot uglier than it was against the Steelers. Atlanta did a really nice job of slowing the run and clamping down on non-George Pickens options in the passing game, forcing the Steelers to eschew the middle of the field entirely and settle for field goals. There are too many weapons on Philadelphia’s offense for me to feel confident they can hold them to under 20 points, and 20 is probably the floor if this unit plays extremely well. I’m looking for a good day from the interior of this defensive line and a pair of capable pass rushers at inside linebacker in Kaden Elliss and Troy Andersen, and I’m hoping Jalen Hurts is more willing to throw to where Jessie Bates and Justin Simmons will be lurking. Turnovers will change the complexion of this game; if the Falcons can’t get them, it’s likely to be an ugly one.

Falcons need to change their offensive identity after lackluster Week 1 – The Falcoholic
Most questions emerging from the Atlanta Falcons’ Week 1 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers surround concerns about quarterback Kirk Cousins’ readiness to play. It all leads to major questions about the Falcons’ offensive identity entering their Week 2 matchup on Monday Night Football against the Philadelphia Eagles. A national audience will be watching to see what adjustments new Falcons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson can make to jump-start a stagnant Falcons offense. Energizing the offense will be critical if the team wants to outpace an Eagles offense that scored 34 points despite turning the ball over three times in their season-opening win over the Packers. There’s little doubt Cousins’ limitations in terms of arm strength and mobility were on display last Sunday, but that isn’t a huge surprise given that he’s only ten months removed from an Achilles injury. It wasn’t as if people were marveling at Kirk’s arm strength and mobility before that injury. Yet, the Falcons should’ve foreseen many of these issues and may have squandered an entire offseason to build a customized offense around Cousins to help offset them. And now they have to try and do so on the fly amid a season with expectations to return to the playoffs.

ESPN+ Cheat Sheet: Our best fantasy football advice for Week 2 – ESPN+
Mike Clay: Upgrade expectations for Eagles receiver DeVonta Smith, who will be matched up against Dee Alford of the Falcons. […] Eric Karabell: Trust in Kirk Cousins’ track record rather than judging the Atlanta offense on its poor Week 1 performance. Start Drake London, count on Bijan Robinson. But don’t over-project Kyle Pitts, who will need volume to achieve top-10 TE status this season.

13 former Eagles among Seniors Category nominees for Pro Football Hall of Fame – PE.com
WR Mike Quick – Quick’s broadcast partner in the SportsRadio 94WIP booth, Merrill Reese, was honored by the Pro Football Hall of Fame earlier this year with the Pete Rozelle Award. Could Quick be on the cusp of a gold jacket? Quick earned five consecutive Pro Bowl berths and posted three straight 1,000-yard seasons, leading the league in receiving yards in 1983.

Why the Eagles paid tribute to late Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan after Reed Blankenship’s INT in Brazil – Inquirer
It has become the normal chain of events these days in the NFL for a defense: force a turnover, run to the end zone, have some fun. After Reed Blankenship dived and picked off Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love midway through the third quarter last week in Brazil, the Eagles safety got up from the grass after being downed and started toward the end zone, cornerback Darius Slay by his side. Players sometimes choreograph these kinds of things, but the Eagles defense had no such plan. Slay, however, had an idea. He told Blankenship as they darted for the end zone to “hit the Quan,” a reference to a dance made popular by Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan, who had died one day before the Eagles’ season-opening game in São Paulo. The news of the rapper’s death hit some of the Eagles hard, Slay included. The team’s defense is mostly made up of players from the South, and Rich Homie Quan, born Dequantes Devontay Lamar, was a proud Atlanta artist who was influenced by the dirty south genre of rap.

3 things we have learned about the Cowboys entering Week 2 – Blogging The Boys
Dallas found another one in Calen Carson. It was a big blow when All-Pro cornerback DaRon Bland went down with a stress fracture in his foot. This gave rookie Calen Carson his shot to start, and he didn’t disappoint. While covering Amari Cooper, Carson only allowed two receptions for 16 yards on nine targets while also logging two pass breakups. Of course, it wasn’t all sunshine and roses. Carson did give up a touchdown to Jerry Juedy. However, that was a small setback to an excellent NFL debut. One thing he’ll need to work on is catching the ball because he could have had a couple of interceptions as well. Like Bland, Carson is looking like another late-round gem for the Cowboys at cornerback.

Giants-Commanders, Week 2: 5 matchups to watch – Big Blue View
Malik Nabers, who put a scare into everyone when he reported Thursday that his knee didn’t feel right, is “good.” Coach Brian Daboll said Nabers will play Sunday, and there is “no concern” about the star rookie wide receiver. Darius Slayton, who has been in the concussion protocol, was trending toward being cleared on Friday. The Giants, then, should have their full complement of receiving weapons on Sunday. Which should give them an advantage over a young, struggling Washington secondary. BBV’s Nick Falato did a great job detailing the Week 1 struggles by the Commanders’ defensive backs. There should be advantages and opportunities throwing the ball for quarterback Daniel Jones and Co. Can the quarterback, who struggled with accuracy and pocket awareness in Week 1, take advantage? While Giants fans are on board with Jones getting the start in Week 2, that grace is not going to last long if the quarterback struggles again. “Our focus is on trying to score points,” Daboll said earlier in the week. The Giants scored the fewest points in the NFL in Week 1. That needs to change quickly. This week’s matchup makes it possible for that to happen.

NFC East matchup: Commanders fans predict a win vs 0-1 Giants at Northwest Stadium on Sunday – Hogs Haven
Hogs Haven readers would appear to have more confidence in Jayden Daniels — who, in his only NFL game to date completed 71% of his passes for 184 yards and rushed for another 88 yards with 2 touchdowns and zero turnovers — to carry the Commanders than they do in Daniel Jones to experience a ‘get well’ game against Washington on Sunday. Some people may not think that confidence is warranted since Danny Dimes’ history versus the Washington franchise is actually on Jones’ side. In his seven career starts against Washington, Jones’ record is 5-1-1. The best games of his otherwise undistinguished career seem to somehow always come at the expense of the burgundy & gold, and he has traditionally gashed the Washington defense with multiple runs per game, many for long gains and/or first downs & touchdowns.

49ers place Christian McCaffrey on the Injured Reserve – Niners Nation
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the San Francisco 49ers are placing All-Pro Christian McCaffrey on the Injured Reserve due to his calf tightness and Achillies tendinitis. McCaffrey will miss the next four games at the very least before the team assesses where he’s at for a potential mid-October return. On Friday, head coach Kyle Shanahan said McCaffrey doesn’t need a procedure and that they’d decide whether to place Christian on the IR within the next 24 hours. That was after saying Thursday was McCaffrey’s “worst day. It’s on and off, but with yesterday [Thursday] having the most pain, it’s something we’re going to be discussing.”

Tua Tagovailoa’s head injury history after scary concussion against Bills – SB Nation
Week 2 of the 2024 NFL season has barely begun, but there is serious concern about the health of one of the league’s starting quarterbacks. In Thursday night’s loss to the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa left the game with a concussion, another such moment in the young quarterback’s career. And a moment that has some wondering if his playing days are over.
