Following the NFL draft, I asked the following question:
Following the draft, which other positions do you want Chris Grier to address via the remaining free agents or even possibly via a trade, from the list above or a position I did not mention, between now and the beginning of training camp, and why?
Below are some of your thoughts and answers to the PQOTD-
SlayerNation1 believes there are just too many holes to fill at this point adequately.
Playing Devil’s Advocate for a moment: there was no way Grier could fill all the holes adequately, due to the sheer number. That said, the Ramsey situation seems to be of the impetuous “Ready… Fire…Aim” variety. Which throughout history, is always followed by a “oops, I didn’t think that through”.
Yarganaught says with the obvious hole at corner, perhaps the team should give X a call.
Sure, more depth is always needed, but the only glaring hole I see is at CB. What is Howard doing these days?
Miami1966 wants a full turnover from the top to the bottom, it seems.
Head Coach, Scouting, and GM. New owners would be nice as well. If not, an additional safety would help
MIAMI235 points out that the entire secondary is a big, worrisome question.
As James brings up some needs filled in. ( Perhaps better than expected) Secondary still, worthy of the Word …. Yikes!
sdphinsfan correctly states that the roster building over the last several years has been haphazard and that the coaching staff will determine the team’s real state during the season.
Troubleshooting this roster at this point is near impossible. Part of it is we’re going to be relying on some young players to do some important things. If they come through, we’ll be fine. If not, well, there’s another hole to fill. The other thing is there is no 5 year plan or view for maintaining and continually building this roster. It’s hap hazard and has been since 2019 (and even well before that).
This last draft was critical. We paid some much needed attention to the trenches that should pay off. Next year, we’ll be able to move on from big contracts, and we’ll have some decent draft capital to work with. We need to make a continual effort to build through the draft, not just one year, but every year. FA is important, but it shouldn’t be the focus as much as it has been for the last 25 years.
As for 2025, the secondary is a concern. But when it comes to the Division, it isn’t the biggest one. The Bills, Jets, and Pats are going to be “run first” teams. It’s what they are and how they’re built. Take that away, and you have a chance. Don’t take that away and it doesn’t matter what you have in the secondary. You’re going to get beat. If we can compete physically and take aware their run, we’ll hold up in the secondary as long as our guys up front are getting pressure.
Offensively, the bloom is off the rose. Defenses have figured out phase one of MM’s Offense. Now we find out if he’s the genius everybody thought he was. And maybe he is…The pick of Savi is going to be real interesting. With him at LG and Paul at LT, we’re built on that side to run power or zone scheme. That makes life hard on a Defense if you can do both. And if we’re making a Defense have to deal with that, they can’t cheat in the pass game and those weapons can be unleashed.
As for how this team fares in 2025, I’m not worried about the roster…hell, no team has a complete roster. This season is going to come down to the performance of the HC and the Offensive staff. And some rookies and 2nd year guys…
phinsatx believes that beyond the dire needs in the secondary, the team has addressed the depth issues otherwise.
In some ways, they have done a lot. The top of the roster hasn’t always performed, but the bottom of the roster has been hot trash. Locked on Dolphins just had a show about all the underperforming parts of the team against playoff teams. Guess what? It was everywhere. Special Teams, Defense, Offense and Coaching all had their moments of failure. They added a lot this off season (especially in depth), but whether they got the chemistry experiment of players, coaching and more is hard to tell. Outside of that, they definitely need to bolster the secondary.
toscana jones believes that the offensive roster is set but is lacking in depth, but the defensive roster still leaves much to be desired.
Well, to this armchair GM it seems that the Offense is pretty much set for the season. the only missing thing is indeed depth, but that is an years-long issue that is plaguing the team. this armchair Gm would like to sign a veteran Guard and, maybe, even a veteran OT for depth, cap allowing.
At OG there are a few valid veterans still sitting out there, like Dalton Risner and Will Hernandez.
The same cannot be said for Defense, the LB core maybe set, with Brooks, Dodson, Gay, Britt, Robinson, Chubb, Phillips, Bell, Kamara, etc… heck, it may even become strength, for one year.
But the DL and espeically the seconday appear to still be up in the air. On the DLine we may still need a veteran DT, but I’m not aware of any valid players still available.
CB is the position that needs the most, one or even two starting caliber players. Asante Samuel is an enticing name, but he would come with serious injury concerns. Rasul Douglas or Stephon Gilmore would be declining players, one-year stopgaps.
So, to recap, after june 1st, this armchair GM would try to sign a veteran OG (Risner, Hernandez) and maybe a veteran OT. Then, I would love to sign one, if not two CBs, Samuel, Douglas or Gilmore.
Of course, we could also use a SAfety, but I doubt there is enough cap space for that…
A lot of wishful thinking, unfoturnately, but maybe something will get done…
Dolfanjoe has some plans once he is properly installed at GM!
Since Grier is fired and i am hired, i wont do a dam thing until after June and see where the Ramsey trade ends up ! Need to see what we have now before we hit the free agent wire. We may have people we do not want to cut now ! Remember folks 1338 free agent available come cut down day and teams trying to trade them off just before that. We should have the money to take on a couple of contracts if they feel we need any starters or depth at a position. There will be good veterans and rookies available, scouts need to do there job !
Miami7 gave us a comprehensive list!
They need two STARTING caliber Safeties (not one on the roster, but Grier’s the smartest guy in the room and assures us we’re all set).
They need two STARTING caliber CB’s (not possible – see above) and if Grier thinks Cam Smith is the answer to anything other than Dolphins BUST trivia he’s somehow even worse than people think.
They need another viable OG cause the depth STINKS. See same for Tackles…
They need DT depth – unless 5th-6th-7th Rd guys are actually NFL caliber (not often) but Grier’s smarter than any other GM so we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.
They need DE/LB rotational depth (and there sat Ogbah, but…?), unless Kamara rises from……………. distinction extinction.
They need TE depth. Julian Hill is hovering around Cam Smith, Tindall territory, but the Dolphins love his ‘potential’ that manifests itself in drops, blown blocking assignments & penalties.
They need RB help. Maybe Gordon works out? 6th Rd. pick success rate indicates it certainly should. Mattison is a nothing enigma of empty promise. No idea what Wright might even be and as good as Achane might be, he is taking too many carries and isn’t really built for workhorse duties. We lose him for any amount of time & the cupboards bare (as far as KNOWING anything at all about what the room holds).
They need a Head Coach.
They need a GM.
They need a new owner.
Grier does find a few here & there in UDFA….bedrock core of any Championship caliber organization right there. Props
Tyreek’s done after this year – Chubb after this year – possibly Phillips – possibly AJax – the secondary is a trainwreck in all 4 spots – 2026 the Q…………..ahhh…..next….
I’ll leave Tua outta this cause the stable around him isn’t anywhere close to good enough to carry him.
They don’t have the $ to get anybody of definitive value in FA – though ANYTHING would be an upgrade over the possibility of Cam Smith actually starting an NFL game. The fact the Dolphins carry that clown on the roster shows how inept they are evaluating talent. Did somebody mention Channing Tindall?
They’re fine. They ‘might’ be able to sneeeeeak in another distant 2nd place finish in the East & hold some semblance of myopic fan belief until December when the wheels fall completely off again. MIGHT? Then another draft of too many needs and not enough picks, and maybe Grier trades away more roster devoid picks to move up & get that one unquestionably undeniable talent?
“The Dolphins make me cry”, but Zeppelin said it best…”The Song Remains the Same”.
Spok507, like most of us, wants a somewhat functional secondary.
The secondary. I’m hoping the FA safeties they brought in can do the job, but I don’t have a lot of faith in Melinfonwu or Davis to be a season long starter. Campbell and McMorris showed some good things last season, and really, nobody can be worse than Poyer, so at least that position is addressed. CB is a different animal, tho. Just because Grier wants and expects Cam Smith to ‘step up’ this season, doesn’t mean he can or will. From what I’ve seen so far, I have more faith in Storm Duck making that leap than Cam Smith. I don’t believe — unless we keep Ramsey — that we even have a starting caliber CB on the roster. Kahou isn’t going to cut it on the outside, so I believe they’re still looking to bring in a veteran to lead that group. Rasul Douglas? Asante Samuel? Maybe the 5th round pick, Marshall, turns out to be a hidden gem? Not sure what they have planned, but the secondary still needs to be addressed. The OLine has its starters, WR, RB, TE seem to be OK. And the DLine has some fresh legs and bulk. The LB seem OK as well despite not having a lot of depth. So add to the secondary and at least make it functional, and they might be OK.
Well, that’s our random ten comments for this evening. It seems there is a consensus that the front office needs to do whatever it takes to provide the defense with an adequate, or at least functional, secondary, given the questions surrounding both corner and safety. I guess Grier can still dig through what’s left and cobble together a somewhat decent secondary. As always, thank you to everyone who participates in our Phisider Question Of The Day nightly.
