Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 5/12/25.

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links …

Roob’s Observations: Why Eagles offense should be much more dangerous in 2025 – NBCSP
1. The Eagles won 16 of their last 17 games, won the Super Bowl, scored 95 points in their last two postseason games, and it’s still fair to say they underachieved on offense. They averaged 26.8 offensive points, 7th-highest in the NFL, and 361 yards, 8th-highest. They were 10th on third down, 11th in yards per play and 13th in the red zone. Not bad. But with the talent on their roster? Those numbers should have been better, and at times the defense really carried this team. Now, with Dallas Goedert back for 2025, the Eagles return 10 of 11 offensive starters, with right guard the only exception. And eight of those starters were also here in 2023. That sort of continuity is extremely rare in the NFL these days and it’s extremely valuable. When you’ve spent that much time playing and practicing and watching film with the guy lining up next to you, you know how he thinks, you see what he sees, you share his football DNA. Multiply that by 10 guys and you have a unit that has the ability to operate at a truly advanced level. And we saw that at times last year, especially in the postseason. But with a Super Bowl MVP quarterback, an MVP-caliber running back, two elite wide receivers, an outstanding tight end and the best offensive line in football and the whole group continuing to grow as a group, I don’t see any reason this offense can’t take a big leap in 2025. You’d like to see them average at least 30 points per game. The highest-scoring Eagles teams were in the 1940s – the 1948 Championship averaged 31.3 and the 1949 NFL champs averaged 30.3. Modern Era, the highest-scoring offense was Chip Kelly’s 2014 team at 29.6 points per game. We don’t know what Kevin Patullo will look like as an offensive coordinator and play caller, but everybody in the organization speaks so highly of him. And with this sort of talent at his disposal? It’s scary how dangerous this offense can be. Last year it was very good. This year could be – should be – even better.

NFL Schedule 2025: Super Bowl champion Eagles will host Cowboys in NFL Kickoff Game – BGN
The 2025 NFL schedule is being revealed over the next few days, but the first bit of news to drop is that the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles will open the season against Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night, September 4. This is the first time in over 20 years that the Eagles and Cowboys will open the season against each other. The history of defending Super Bowl champions in Week 1 is encouraging, but it’s interesting that a game with pretty big implications for the NFC East will kick things off.

Cowboys to play Eagles in 2025 NFL season opener – Blogging The Boys
This matchup also marks the return of Dak Prescott. Although the Cowboys haven’t had the ultimate team success under Prescott yet, they have played extremely well against the Eagles with him under center with a record of 9-4. In Philadelphia, Prescott is 3-3 as a starter during his career. This is a huge game to begin the season and a chance for the Cowboys to start their journey back to the playoffs with a bang.

Eagles player review: RB Will Shipley edition – PhillyVoice
In his rookie season, I thought that Shipley exhibited that he too can avoid egregious mistakes (i.e. fumbles), but he also showed that he can perhaps be more of a home run threat than Gainwell. Shipley has 4.39 speed, but he also runs with balance and is able to stack multiple cuts in succession to make defenders miss while continuing to move north and south. Gainwell signed a one-year deal in free agency with the Steelers for a little under $1.8 million. If the Eagles wanted to keep him, Gainwell would not have been much of a financial burden. It feels to me like the Eagles think — and I agree — that Shipley can be an upgrade on Gainwell as the Eagles’ RB2 / two-minute offense back in 2025.

Jordan Mailata serenades Chris Stapleton, attends Truist Championship during busy Philly weekend – Inquirer
It’s been quite a busy weekend for Eagles offensive tackle Jordan Mailata. The 6-foot-8 Australian didn’t exactly blend in with the crowd as he walked alongside the 13th and 14th hole of the Philadelphia Cricket Club. Attending the final round of the Truist Championship, Mailata watched Rory McIlroy and his friend, Samoan golfer Tony Finau, tee off on both holes. Surrounded by security and fans, Mailata was welcomed with a number of “Go Birds” and E-A-G-L-E-S chants. The Super Bowl champion had quite the view, towering above fans with his glasses propped above his head.

NFL betting: Odds for each team to win the Super Bowl in 2026 – ESPN
The NFL draft is in the books and soon the schedule will be revealed as we inch closer the the 2025 NFL season, which will culminate with Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. on Feb. 8, 2026. The most recent Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, put an end to the Kansas City Chiefs’ bid for a third straight championship and those two teams find themselves with the shortest odds to win again at +600, but there are plenty of teams who are looking to put their name on the Lombardi Trophy.

2007 NFL Redraft: Rebuilding the first round based on PFF grades and data – PFF
26. Philadelphia Eagles: EDGE Brian Robison, Texas (Round 4, Pick 102). Original pick: EDGE Anthony Spencer, Purdue. Robison was a solid pass rusher who racked up more than 500 quarterback pressures across 11 seasons in Minnesota. While he was never an elite player, he did earn a solid 81.2 PFF pass-rush grade from 2008 to 2012. Meanwhile, the Eagles were coming off a season in which they ranked 17th in PFF pass-rush grade.

19 NFL stars who changed teams during 2025 offseason – SB Nation
DT Milton Williams is now a New England Patriot: The biggest contract given out to a free agent this season went to Williams, who goes from Philadelphia to the Patriots. He’s a quick gap shooter who should pair well with DT Christian Barmore. EDGE Josh Sweat is now an Arizona Cardinal: Sweat reunites with DC Jonathan Gannon in Arizona, where he also cashed in after getting a Super Bowl ring. Sweat is a long and bendy pass rusher who gives the Cardinals much more size up front, that they really lacked last season. CB Darius Slay is now a Pittsburgh Steeler: Slay moved on from the Eagles after a Super Bowl ring, and now tries to get the Steelers over the Wild Card hump on a one-year deal. Slay is 34 years old so the speed and burst might not be there anymore, but he’s incredibly smart and can recognize routes. The Steelers need CB help bad, and this could be a fine option.

The 5 O’Clock Club: Opposing defensive disruptors in the NFC East – Hogs Haven
The NFC East features some intimidating disruptors among the front-7 on every team, with at least three new ones having been added via April’s draft. In 2023, the Eagles drafted Jalen Carter, who is proving to be a game-wrecker that requires opposing offensive coordinators to game plan around him. Philly also used a first round pick on the defensive line in 2022 when the selected Jordan Davis. In last year’s free agency, they struck gold by signing LB Zack Baun, and in this year’s draft, they drafted Jihaad Campbell at #31 overall after trading up one spot to select him.

Commanders cut T Anim Dankwah, S Trey Rucker – PFT
The Commanders announced a handful of roster moves on Sunday. They confirmed the previously reported signing of offensive tackle Tyre Phillips. Phillips has spent time with the Ravens, Giants, and Eagles since being drafted in the third round by Baltimore in 2020. Washington also announced that they have waived offensive tackle Anim Dankwah and safety Trey Rucker off of their 90-man roster. [BLG Note: Dankwah was an Eagles UDFA signing last year.]

When should Jaxson Dart start? When will he start? – Big Blue View
Ideally, the Giants follow the Chiefs playbook and sit Dart until a meaningless late-season game after they’ve clinched their playoff spot. (I jest, but that is what happened in Daboll’s first season when Davis Webb started in Week 18.) The wild card is the pressure on Daboll this year to win. If Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston are not getting the job done by the Giants’ bye week, no one will be shocked to see Dart start after the bye, if he progresses well in training camp. Whether that will be the best thing for Dart’s career is a different question, as Mitchell Trubisky, Trey Lance, and Justin Fields might attest – maybe even Trevor Lawrence, who started right away and looked NFL-ready as a rookie but has not progressed since then.

Steelers sign veteran running back after tryout – Behind The Steel Curtain
The Ohio State product had 258 yards and two touchdowns with the Indianapolis Colts over the last two seasons. Trey Sermon was drafted in the third round by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2021 NFL Draft. He had 167 yards and one touchdown as a rookie, before going to Philadephia in 2022. Over four years, Sermon has 505 yards while averaging 3.8 yards per carry and five touchdowns.
