Where are the Detroit Lions the strongest and the deepest on their 2025 roster?
With most of the roster building done for the 2025 NFL season, it’s time to take inventory on the Detroit Lions players. We’ve already compiled an estimated depth chart, and projected what the 53-man roster may look like.
But let’s take a bird’s eye view of the roster rather than getting into the nitty gritty.
The best teams in the NFL have a specific identity, be it an explosive offense, an impenetrable defense, a deep-shot passing game, or a bruising ground attack. We know the Lions are all about grit, but where is their roster the best?
So today’s Question of the Day is:
What is the Detroit Lions’ biggest strength on the team?
My answer: I’m going to stick with the offensive line. Several times, Lions coaches have referred to the offensive line as “the engine under the hood” or the heart of the team, and it’s hard to disagree. It’s the offensive line that keeps Jared Goff upright and on schedule. It’s the offensive line that clears paths for Detroit’s dynamic running duo. And it’s the offensive line that just wears the other team down as the game goes on.
Heading into the offseason, the Lions already had three Pro Bowl level players in place with left tackle Taylor Decker, center Frank Ragnow, and right tackle Penei Sewell. Over the past two years, the Lions have made the necessary moves to ensure all five spots are filled with talented players. In 2024, they drafted Christian Mahogany, signed Kevin Zeitler, and re-signed Graham Glasgow. This year, they spent a second and fifth-round pick on Tate Ratledge and Miles Frazier, respectively. They now have four legit talents to fill in the guard spots both for this year and the foreseeable future.
While the Lions have plenty of talent elsewhere (skill position players and secondary come to mind, easily), it’s the offensive line that is both the most impressive and core to Detroit’s identity.
