New York Giants headlines for Thursday

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

5. Jaxson Dart — New York Giants (Rd. 1, Pk. 25). Dart has to be thrilled to be a first-round pick, with a team that wanted him badly enough to jump back into the first to select him. The Giants present a tricky situation for a young quarterback, however, after the failed Daniel Jones experiment has the entire administration’s backs against the wall entering 2025.

The pressure is on coach Brian Daboll (18-32-1 in three seasons) and general manager Joe Schoen to return to the playoffs this year. To that end, they’ve signed a pair of veteran quarterbacks who are expected to be ahead of him on the depth chart: presumptive starter Russell Wilson as well as Jameis Winston. If the Giants play well, Dart is sitting on the bench to develop for the forseeable future. If they don’t, there will be pressure to play him ahead of schedule in ‘25, and it very likely ends in the team bringing in a new coach/GM combo that was not involved in the move to draft him.

Listen up, rookie

Giants’ Kayvon Thibodeaux has thoughts about Abdul Carter potentially taking his job | NJ.com

Thibodeaux said Tuesday he is “super excited” about the Giants picking Carter. “I think he’s a great player. We can use him in a lot of different ways.”

“It’s a great [outside linebacker] room that we’re in,” he said. “Having another first-round guy is amazing. I‘m excited to see how it goes.”

As for the possibility that all three outside linebackers could be on the field at the same time, Thibodeaux said, “I think it’ll be dope. I don’t know how they’ll do it yet. But it’s going to be exciting to get to work.”

There has been so much talk comparing Abdul Carter to Micah Parsons.

It all makes sense. Same college (Penn State), same position (edge rusher), same number (11) and same seek-and-destroy style of playing the game on defense (just check their highlights).

Key intel on all 32 teams after the 2025 NFL draft: Buzz, fits | ESPN.com

The Giants said they settled on Jaxson Dart after the Monday meetings of draft week. “At that point he had checked all the boxes,” a team source said of the Ole Miss prospect. They also decided they wouldn’t trade above Pittsburgh, banking on the Steelers opting for defense at No. 21.

And in talking to teams in the 20s about a trade up, the Giants made clear they would not part with the No. 65 pick. Houston was comfortable with that.

While the Giants worked out Shedeur Sanders the week before the draft, Sanders sensed much earlier that New York probably wasn’t in the cards for him. Sanders openly acknowledged during the predraft process that he didn’t hit it off with Giants coaches, per a source.

What if the Saints took Jaxson Dart with the ninth pick? Perhaps the Giants would have been in the most difficult position, as they traded back into the first round to select Dart. Considering the urgency they showed in doing so, they may have felt that Dart was a significantly better option than Shough. If they didn’t trade up with Houston, they may have still gambled on Shough with the 34th overall pick. Or they could have considered themselves satisfied with Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston in their building and addressed a different position altogether.

Why people are connecting the Giants to Gabe Davis

Relationship between Giants GM Joe Schoen, Mike Derice went ‘sideways’ | USAToday.com

The New York Giants parted ways with national scout Mike Derice last week, a move that was seen as a major surprise in NFL scouting circles. The underlying reasons behind the divorce were unclear at first, but now as the smoke begins to clear, it seems as if the dismissal was not performance-based.

“My understanding is that he got kind of sideways — there was maybe a bit of a personality conflict with Joe Schoen,” Neil Stratton of Inside the League said. “I don’t have a lot of details there but what I can tell you is that it wasn’t because of poor performance.”

Giants hire Usama Young as Vice President of Player Engagement | Giants.com

Usama Young, a former safety who played eight seasons in the NFL and won Super Bowl XLIV with the Saints, has been announced as Vice President of Player Engagement for the New York Giants.

Young had served in the NFL Player Engagement office since 2017 and helped support players and their families through continuing education, financial literacy, and development in their personal and professional lives during and after their playing days. Young also worked with rookies specifically to guide them in their physical, mental, and financial well-being.
