Philadelphia’s 2022 first-round pick is now under contract through 2026.
The Philadelphia Eagles are exercising the fifth-year option in Jordan Davis’ rookie contract, according to a report from NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
Davis is now signed through the 2026 season.
The Eagles had until the May 2 deadline to decide whether or not to pick up the option that is valued at $12,938,000 fully guaranteed.
Here’s what we previously wrote about Davis following the 2024 season:
REVIEW: After logging 519 snaps (45%) in 2023, Davis only logged 388 snaps (37%) this season. Including the playoffs, the 2022 first-round pick played the fourth-most snaps of any Eagles defensive tackle. Davis’ impact arguably goes beyond the box score since he’s often tasked with eating space. And he actually did show up with some big plays in the stat sheet during the postseason; he doubled his sack total from the regular season.
OUTLOOK: Declaring Davis a bust is obviously too harsh. But it’s fair to say he hasn’t exactly lived up to high expectations associated with being the No. 13 overall pick. It’ll be very interesting to see how the Eagles handle his contract situation moving forward. 2025 is the last year of Davis’s rookie contract but the Eagles must decide to exercise his fifth-year option or not by the May deadline. If they do pick it up, they’ll be handing over a fully guaranteed $12.9 value to Davis for the 2026 season. That’s a lot of money for a player who was basically DT4 this past season. And based on that usage, it doesn’t seem like Vic Fangio is going to massively expand his role moving forward.
One can wonder if the front office and Fangio are on the same page with Davis. Howie Roseman might not be so keen to give up on one of his first-round picks. Fangio has proved to not really care about investment (see: top free agent signing Bryce Huff being a healthy scratch in the Super Bowl), instead focusing on playing the best players.
Paying Davis $12.9 million in 2026 won’t be justified if he doesn’t continue to develop, and specifically as a pass rusher. But perhaps there is hope for the 25-year-old. He’s about to enter his fourth season and it wasn’t until Year 4 that Dexter Lawrence really blossomed. And he had some good pass rushing moments in the playoffs.
When it comes to the worst case scenario, the Eagles would clearly rather overpay Davis for the 2026 season than see him ball out in 2025 only to potentially lose him in free agency.
The feeling here is that there wasn’t an obvious decision to make with Davis. Ultimately, the Eagles decided they’re not ready to give up on his potential.
We’ll see if they made the right choice.
