Well-deserved for one of the best players on defense

The Minnesota Vikings really knocked it out of the park in free agency last season, and one of their bigger signings was bringing in edge defender Andrew Van Ginkel in from the Miami Dolphins. He signed a two-year deal last offseason, which meant 2025 was already set to be a contract year for him.

Not anymore.

The Vikings announced on Tuesday afternoon that they have agreed to a one-year contract extension with Van Ginkel, a move that will put him in purple through the 2026 season. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the extension is worth $23 million, though details on how it’s structured are still unavailable.

Van Ginkel was drafted in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft by Miami and spent his first five seasons on South Beach. The Vikings then signed him to a two-year contract last March, and he ripped it up from the first game of the season, intercepting Daniel Jones for a pick-six in the Vikings’ season-opening win over the New York Giants last season. He added another pick-six in London, courtesy of Aaron Rodgers, and set a career-high with 11.5 sacks on the season. Those numbers were good enough to get him a spot in the Pro Bowl games as well as a Second-Team All-Pro nod.

Van Ginkel has proven himself to be a very valuable piece of Brian Flores’ defense, and this extension is certainly well-deserved. After all, who knows what his value could have been if he had the chance to hit the open market after this season?

Congratulations to Andrew Van Ginkel on his newly minted contract extension, and here’s hoping that his second chapter in purple is even better than his first one.
