Dez Bryant says Quinn Ewers is Dan Marino 2.0: “I like him over Tua already”

Dez Bryant says Quinn Ewers is Dan Marino 2.0: “I like him over Tua already”

I didn’t say it, he did!

I don’t know what’s going on.

I’m sitting here minding my own business, trying to make a cut-up for Miami Dolphins’ second-round pick Jonah Savaiineaa, and I get a text message about something former Dallas Cowboys STAR wide receiver Dez Bryant tweeted out. Now, the first thing I’m thinking is:

“Oh, no! He just threatened to fight former Dolphins’ general manager Jeff Ireland on PPV on the undercard of a Jake Paul fight!” But what I would come to read was even more insane and unexpected. My jaw nearly hit the floor!

What?!

Now, first let me start by saying, I like the selection. Ewers was one of the quarterbacks pre-draft that felt like he’d fit the system — and in the 7th-round?!? Sign. Me. Up. But not even the most optimistic fan would call him Marino 2.0, even if he does have a lightning-quick release modeled after the Dolphins legend.

“I’ve definitely watched him play, and yeah, my dad would always tell me growing up that I need to have a quick release like Dan Marino,” Ewers said. He continued: “So I grew up hearing my dad talk about him all the time. Definitely watched him play, and his release is very quick as well.”

Ewers, 22, was the highest-rated high school player in the country before the 2021 season. He would end up at Ohio State before transferring to Texas, where he played three seasons in Steve Sarkisian’s offense, completing 65% of his passes for 9,128 yards, 68 total touchdowns, and 24 interceptions. Ewers looked comfortable in Sark’s offense, an offense that Miami’s QB1 is familiar with and something that Ewers believes will give him an advantage in Mike McDaniel’s system.

“It’s definitely going to help for sure, 100 percent. Running some of the same concepts. I know ‘Sark’ (Steve Sarkisian) went down there to talk to Mike (McDaniel) in the offseason. I think when they were in OTAs or something like that. We got to hear some stories,” Ewers said. “I’m just beyond excited and grateful for the opportunity the Dolphins have given me. I’m excited to meet all the new teammates I’m going to have. It’s going to be fun. I think it all happens for a reason. I’m excited to be a Dolphin.”

Familiarity in a similar offense, coupled with his lightning-quick release and a mental make-up that allowed him to overcome Arch Manning breathing down his neck and a transfer out of Ohio State, gives me enough reason to believe he can make the battle for QB2 interesting. If Ewers can even be a suitable backup for Tagovailoa, the pick would be a home run, but there’s the slight chance he could be even more. Could he become the player so many analysts and scouts thought he was capable of before?

Stranger things have happened, and I believe with everything falling into place, that’s what Bryant sees. He may never have the accolades of Marino or push Tagovailoa for the starting job, but Ewers has the chance to be an essential piece in Miami.

And hey, who knows what could happen!

What are your thoughts on the Miami Dolphins selecting Quinn Ewers in the 7th round of the 2025 NFL Draft? Do you think his skill set fits Mike McDaniel’s offense? How excited are you for the Zach Wilson vs. Quinn Ewers preseason battle? Let us know in the comments section below!
