The Bengals virtually corned themselves into a guard, and Fairchild was the best available
The second night of the 2025 NFL Draft has wrapped up, and more than 80 players have already heard their names called, with many more readying for that opportunity Saturday.
For Cincinnati, it took Texas A&M defensive lineman Shemar Stewart in the first round, selecting him 17th overall. It then selected South Carolina linebacker Demetrius Knight Jr., giving Al Golden a few new faces to mold on the defensive side of the ball.
The next obvious need, which many thought they’d address in the second round with Tate Ratledge, was on the offensive line, and that’s where they headed with selection 81. The Bengals took Dylan Fairchild from Georgia, a 6-foot-5 and 318-pound guard.
“His footwork is inconsistent, but he masks that weakness with his effort, hands, and ability as a pass blocker. He latches on and locks out when he gets his hands inside. He can rewrap his hands, stay in front,t and hold his ground against power rushers,” ESPN’s Steve Muench wrote ahead of the draft.
The Bengals’ interior, especially at the guard position, needed help, and Fairchild should provide some instant relief. At the very least, he will be a rotational player from the start and could compete for a starting position as well.
Fairchild spent four seasons at Georgia, winning the College Football Playoff twice. He played in all 14 games his last two seasons and was a proven starter for one of the best programs in the country.
That said, the need was obvious for the Bengals here, and now let’s get your opinion on what you’d grade this selection.
