New York Giants news for Friday

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

Other Giant observations

Boomer: Cut Daniel Jones some slack after Week 1 disaster | WFAN.com

“Does anyone want to give any credence to the fact that he is coming back from an ACL surgery earlier than normal, and is playing with a number of guys who are also playing together for the first time on that offensive line?” Boomer said. “He is still a captain, he is a leader of the team…he had a bad game. I don’t necessarily know if the offensive line had a good game. They weren’t able to run the ball effectively against Minnesota…I don’t want to throw total cold water on the situation. I want to give him a chance to see if he can find something.”

PFF Grades and Data: Key insights for every NFL Week 2 game | PFF

Dexter Lawrence delivered one of the most dominant performances of his career as a pass rusher last week against Minnesota. In his 80 regular-season games with at least 10 pass-rush attempts, Lawrence’s 50% win rate last week now stands as his best ever. His previous high was 40%, set last season against Green Bay.

Giants’ new defensive coordinator knows they’re doomed if Kayvon Thibodeaux, Brian Burns remain invisible | NJ.com

Shane Bowen, the Giants’ new defensive coordinator, isn’t hiding from the harsh reality that this team is doomed if it doesn’t get more from its edge rushers.

Kayvon Thibodeaux and Brian Burns were practically invisible in the 28-6 season-opening loss to the Vikings. They had one pressure each — a quarterback hit for Thibodeaux and a hurry for Burns. Thibodeaux wound up with a 48.1 Pro Football Focus pass rush grade, while Burns checked in at 57.6 — also underwhelming.

Storylines to follow in Giants vs. Commanders | Giants.com

“Me personally my biggest thing with Week 1, it’s exactly what you just kind of alluded to, the highs of training on your own, coming back with the guys, for us specifically, a new system, OTAs, training camp,” safety Jason Pinnock added. “And you’re on this big roller coaster and you get to the top and it’s Week 1. It’s not like the roller coaster is over. It’s one week. I mean obviously, yes, we’d like to win. Home opener, at home, new jerseys, feeling good. Of course, that’s the goal. But no panic. Just urgency.”

Giants Injury Tracker: Darius Slayton takes big step | SNY.tv

Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton, who has been in concussion protocol, is making progress. Slayton was in a red, non-contact jersey at Thursday’s practice.

‘Tantalizing’ and ‘depressing’: NFC East writers pick 1 word to describe QBs they cover | The Athletic

Charlotte Carroll (Giants): Depressing. There are plenty of colorful words going around after Daniel Jones’ performance on Sunday, but it was just a depressing and disheartening season opener for the Giants and their fans. And it was a shame. There was beautiful weather for a packed crowd celebrating the 100th season of the franchise. And Jones just didn’t deliver. The crowd dwindled by game’s end, and fans were left feeling hopeless the next morning. It’s Week 2, and yet it already feels like it’s going to be a long season.

Emmanuel Forbes to have thumb surgery | Pro Football Talk

Forbes will have surgery to repair a torn UCL on Friday. Forbes was listed as a full participant in practice on Wednesday and was on the field again on Thursday, but having the surgery now will allow Forbes to avoid having to deal with the issue for the entire season.

Joe Whitt Jr. Presser: The tackling wasn’t to the standard in Week 1 | Hogs Haven

Defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. talked about several things that went wrong in a very disappointing performance from his side of the ball. The team lost leverage, had communication issues, and failed to finish the QB. Washington also struggled on 3rd downs, and didn’t force any turnovers. Another big issue was the poor tackling that Whitt Jr. said wasn’t up to his standard.

Kliff Kingsbury: Jayden Daniels turned my worst play call into a TD | Pro Football Talk

Late in the fourth quarter of the Commanders’ loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday, Jayden Daniels ran for a one-yard touchdown. Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury said that was all on Daniels and no credit goes to the play calling.

“He just was not going to be denied there on the goal line. It says a lot about him in that situation. A lot of people would not have taken that opportunity to drive that ball down and then put it into the end zone, and he wanted the ball in his hands and wanted to score. That was exciting to see,” said Kingsbury.
