Penn State edge defender Abdul Carter has emerged as the clear top choice for the New York Giants in our most recent Giants mock draft tracker.
The recent speculation in the draft community is that the Giants will select Carter after the Tennessee Titans take quarterback Cam Ward at No. 1 and the Cleveland Browns select Travis Hunter at No. 2.
Mock drafters have followed suit. Carter, who would join Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux as part of a talented edge group, was the choice in 37 of 72 mock draft (51.4%). A week ago, Carter and Hunter were tied as the top choice for New York, each chosen in 37.8% of mock drafts.
At his pre-draft press conference on Wednesday, Giants GM Joe Schoen expressed no concern about finding enough playing time for Carter, Burns and Thibodeaux.
“We would find a way. It’s no different than with Travis Hunter. You’ve got a first-round corner, and we just brought in Paulson [Adebo]. We’ve got three receivers — you figure it out. You’ve got good football players, you figure out, find a way to get him on the field and utilize him,” Schoen said. “You’ve got Kayvon, and you’ve got Burns, you’ve got Dex [Dexter Lawrence] inside. It gives you a lot of options. He’s a versatile player. He’s young, just 21 years old, and an exciting player to watch. Yeah, you can’t have enough pass rushers.”
Hunter was the choice for the Giants in 22 mock drafts (30.6%).
Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders was chosen for the Giants in only eight mock drafts (11.1%).
One of the notable mock drafters who gave Sanders to the Giants was Colin Cowherd of FOX Sports. He said:
“I think Jameis Winston and Tommy DeVito, they’ll cut them in camp. I think they’re gonna go with Russell [Wilson] for a year. Even Russell’s contract isn’t that punitive, it’s all based on how many games and how well he plays. I think [Sanders] is a star. … Brian Daboll has proven a history that you can give him average stuff, and he can correct it. I don’t think there’s a lot to correct.”
